6 Minutes and 2 seconds!

Sounds like a lot but when I started editing, I found my self with way too much footage.

Now what to throw out?

That dialog? Nooo way!
This tilt? But I need that.
How about this sentence - allright.
But it dit not realy help.
Sacrifying this whole scene would do the trick but it´s vital for the story.

Ahhhhh my nerves. Never had such a pain while editing.

At least I can do a Directors cut after the fest (sigh).

I guess I am really lucky that I chose a story that is short enough. My first cut was about 5 minutes I think and then I started to tighten it up. It's amazing how many small things you still find which are unnecessary.
 
You have to look at it with a critical, unbiased eye. Watch the performances not what you already expect to happen.

The first roughcut of my 8 page script was 6:14. My final cut was 5:32. There was tons of footage I didn't want to cut but had a trusted agent tell it to me straight.

But who am I to give advise, this was my first time editing anything. First submission for that matter. In fact just ignore me!
 
If you don't end up cutting your favorite scene, then it's not a successful edit. In my humble opinion, of course. :)
 
It's easier to cut than make up for lack of something in post, though especially when you were the DP.
 
I was lucky with this film, there was a lot of dialogue that I was going to cut out anyway so it all fits. But for story reasons I cut out two of my favorite shots, that hurts!
 
My painful phase was when I first wrote my script and clocked it to 14 minutes. Haha. That's a lot of scenes I had to scrap. Miraculously, I'm pretty good at estimating time, because I stopped cutting when I could clock it at 6 minutes, and it looks like my footage is going to be just under the 6 minute mark. But seriously -- cutting down my original script was painful.

I'd pay to watch it! Then have various DVXusers pop in and buy clocks or have clocks repaired. The clerk (me) making off comments to them about Penguin not making up his mind.

JDS: Yes sir, I need this coo-coo clock to instead of saying "Coo-Coo" I want it to say "aaaahhrighhht". (sounds like McConaughey in Dazed and Confused)
(Clerk isn't paying JDS any attention)
JDS: Sir?
(JDS looks in the direction of Penguin)
JDS: Whats with that guy?
Dustin: He is fasinating to watch, he has picked that Sun dial up like 10 times. Then he was creating shadows to test it out. This guy needs to F*ckin buy something already.
(JDS pushes his clock forward)
JDS: If you could pull away from that freak for a second.
(Mark Johnson enters store)
Mark: You guys sell beer here?
(Dustin points to store sign, which reads "Tick Tock, we do Clocks")
Mark: So no?
JDS: Are you serious?
(Penguin walks up with said sun dial)
Penguin: Can I get this in metalic-green?
