Ouch! That's friggin fast

Boy that's great news for sports photography!*

(for the sarcastically challenged, i.e. 90% of the board, that's a joke because you'd have 18 million images to find just the "right" shot.)

6 million fps!?! Holy jeebus...

I'm not sure if I'm reading it right though. It almost seems like it's not a traditional camera, but something to capture nuerons and whatnot to see their reactions. I didn't understand the technobabble though.

I was thinking the same thing. You'd have to be a wiz to sort through 6 million frames per second. Plus be fast on the trigger.

But on the bright side, with 18 million images, one of them is bound to be good :)

Well, "Under Siege 2" ran 99 minutes. At 24fps, that's 142,560 frames. And not one of them contained anything worthwhile.

So maybe if they had 18 million frames (that's 12,500 minutes) they'd have had better odds?

This isnt a normal camera though is it, this thing is for taking photos of atoms and stuff.... I doubt it has a PL mount...

I woudl guess at that speed, it probably records onto some top secret pulsating, glowing green goop in a glass jar with lots of tubes and wires or something.

I hear Forsman is shooting his QuestFest entry on it... and already has the prototype of the Zacuto rails and matte box.

So, lets see. If Zak shot a full second short, then reviewed it at 24 fps, that's just under 70 hours of footage to work with. Who's gonna be able to compete with that? Lets just declare Zak the Questfest winner & move on.

I think 6 miilion fps would be of . . . very limited application.

My flash fired but five million images are under exposed... seven hundred thousand are over-exposed... and now I gotta' take off the next 6 months to find the right shot within the three hundred thousand that look pretty good.

FTR... I hope nobody here even considered that this cam has any practical application in anything related to photographing people or events.

I'm assuming at least the 10% who get sarcasm already picked up on that... and hopefully the other 90% get it now.

10,000fps is enough to get a bullet in flight. They use higher frame rates (half million or so) to catch atomic reactions and things, but 6 million frames is way past anything that has a practical use.

They'll use it to photograph quarks.

I think you're missing it, really. With this technology, as I understand it, the typical soundstage - not to mention a whole studio - could be placed in a SD-card sized device. Lighting issues will go away. And Production time for a typical film - assuming hyperannuated miniature actors - would be cut to about .000004 of what it is now. This is revolutionary!

What I want to learn more about is the DOF effects possible... Unless I'm mistaken, DOF is a whole different game with this technique. Can you have the nucleus in full sharp focus and the mitochondria in a pleasant blur?

Excellent link!

This device is effectively "1 Pixel" in the temporal domain, but its a 6 Mega Tixel in the spatial domain! :)

and soon to be Mega Voxel...
