other goodies from Panasonic at NAB

Or you could just plug in an external FireWire or USB2 hard disk directly to the camera and dump the P2 contents instantly. No need for a laptop.

Any word on the price of that widescreen monitor? It really looks sweet.
Has this been officially confirmed?

Dumping from P2 directly to an external hard disk has been confirmed.

I expect that the P2 Store will be a more limited-audience type of product, really only for those who need to shoot long continuous takes and need to swap and offload cards continuously.

With the ability to dump cards directly to an off-the-shelf USB2 hard disk, I think this pretty much removes the whole you'll-need-a-laptop worry from the workflow.

Dang.

Now I'm going to have to sell my other nephew, too.

That's funny!

Did anyone see the supposedly under 20K "Drake" HD camera at NAB? I was once intrested in that camera but now panny unleashed this little beast for under 10k. I might have to sell my little brothers and sisters.

$1800 list price for the P2 Store Drive.

Ciao,

harlan

They could add a speaker, and mike and make it double as a 6 month MP3 player / event recorder, for persons who have too much money and looking for something to spend it on, but do not own a P2 camcorder.

$1,800 seems like a lot of money when the same thing can be done with other solutions. Unless they add the ability to do "something else" I see that as a hard sell.

Now if the P2 store drive could record DIRECTLY from the Camera's Firewire output (just like a Firestore) That would be very nice!

Yeah, it's sure sounding bettter and better. I'm already strongly considering buying one, if a couple of other details are worked out and after seeing the image and also seeing what the JVC HD100 can do. After what Michael Pappas said in the HD100 forum I have got my hopes up for the JVC again. But I find it hard that it will look better than the HVX, considering specs alone. Also, the JVC wide angle lens price is a let down.

About using a firewire drive for dumping P2, I was just thinking, wouldn't it be a bit risky, like ou think you dumped the footage , but you didn't for some reason, like it failed or something. Then you delete what you recorded in the P2 to record new material. Then when you get home, you find out the footage is not there. At least with a laptop you can check before you deleting the P2. I can see such thing happenig when you are in a hurry.

im assuming the camera has a file browser to let you see whats on the attached drive. possibly even play it back or coy it back to the p2 if needed. i dont see why not anyway.. so im assuming theres some way to assure yourself its all good on the attached drive.
