OT: quick question on Furman power conditioners

Hey, I need to put an order through in a few minutes for a Furman power conditioner. I've used the Classic line before and would go that route, but I'm wondering if I can go with a Merit X series for my application and save $125. It's just for a recording booth, currently using a wireless Sennheiser going into a ZED-10 mixer hooked up to a Kona LHi. I'm not really concerned about the surge protection as much as I am getting a clean AC signal. For vocals (voice overs only), do I really need Linear filtering?

It's an interesting question, the power conditioner. I don't use them myself, but I nearly always simply eliminate the power problems by using DC. Most audio gear converts to DC, so make sure you need it.

I imagine it depends on how dirty the AC is in your building. Some electrical systems will impart more noise than others. I have Merit M-8x in my rack, and I also have a fancier Furman with all the filtering. I have my consumer gear plugged into the M-8x, and the good gear plugged into the nicer one. It might be worth a try to get the cheap one and give it a listen.

I use brick wall surge suppressors and I really could hear a sonic difference. They are actually better surge suppressors than anything else on the market because they don't use MOV's. Go to http://www.sellcom.com/brickwall.html

They are better than furman and all other surge protectors and also act as line filters. They have several models. I bought 20A 2-plug to then plug my apc backups into, thus protecting and providing clean power to those units, which then power my computers etc. Then for my bluesky monitors (speakers) I bought the 8-plug audiophile unit that isolates each plug from the others for cleaner signal. I noticed a lot more resolution from the speakers right away. I thought it was bs but man what a difference. The site explains why a series mode suppressor is better than MOV's so if you're interested check them out. Oh to even get something even close to these you'd have to spend over $1000 with fur man and monster and they won't give you the best surge suppression because they still use $.50 MOV's in their higher end units.
