OT: adobe encore scores a knockout vs apple dvd studio pro...

this is a bit off topic. but i was so excited about my experience i thought it might be of value to others.

as a veteran user of apples FC studio. i have been using dvd studio pro as my dvd authoring tool of choice. i never really liked how it worked, or was too impressed with its output. but i used it because it was there and i knew how to use it.

i purchased adobes master collection nearly 2 years ago and have had a copy of encore but never bothered to break it out.

well, last night i had some time and decided to give it a quick run through...

WOW! its SO easy. SO intuitive. and the default output is hands-down better than that of dvdspro!

and whats cooler is if you know photoshop. you can design nearly all the interactivity of the interface right there in a single psd file. button overlays and all.

if you have it - TRY it.
if you dont have it - GET IT!

I understand your excitement but I feel it needs to be tempered some. You like it know just wait until your entire project is corrupted and will not open causing you to start from scratch. This once happened 3 times on a big Blu-Ray project. You do know that DVDSP excepts layered PSDs as well right. Also can you explain "default output" ? Is this the I don't care what settings I use let Adobe/Apple think for me output?

I agree DVDSP needs a face lift and an overhaul, but unless Blu-Ray is required I will not even think about using Encore.

I'm not trolling, but I have tried Encore CS3/4/5 and it is too clunky for me.

Little things are annoying, like trying to figure out what templates contain motion menus and which don't.

Blu ray is still pretty buggy, and surprisingly the CS5 version wasn't released as a 64-bit option.

I doubt DVD SP will get much further modernizing.

I hope I'm wrong.

ok, im a career graphic designer and i like the fact that i can build the entire interface and it opens with a simple "import as" and boom. there it is exactly as you designed it with all the layer names intact and you can do minor edits there without going back to photoshop. all you have to do is assign the targets for the buttons.

default output meaning select a reasonable target data rate and like what comes out. without having to do a ton of man-handling

and david, you can troll all you want - HA! but "clunky" really? thats exactly the term ive always used for dvdspro... oh well. to each his own. and i dont use templates. so ive pretty much disregarded that whole feature set.

it just seemed to get me to where i want to be in the shortest time and with the most pleasure.

maybe next week i'll be here eating my words after it blows up and ruins my whole bluray project ; )

I used to use Encore (up to CS3) and always found it clunky. I like the pick-whip but that's about it. I think DVSP is much smoother (as long as you process the video through compressor). I do menus in Motion and overlays in Photoshop and everything is sweet.

I was having a couple of problems recently in DVSP and so I thought I would try to resolve them using Encore. Big mistake, it took me all of two minutes to run back to DVSP, sort my head out then sort the problems.

Granted DVSP and the whole FCS needs a major (and I mean MAJOR, like from ground up) overhaul but the system, for me, is still the smoothest of all the suites and my workflow has improved dramatically since I went to FCS.

I like the pick-whip but that's about it
man, thats the one thing i hate about encore...

maybe my background as a designer has me coming at this from a different angle... or maybe im just full of crap ; )

Don't say that, I know from reading your posts on here that your not full of crap.

It's just that what works for one person won't necessarily work for another, this whole thread is testimony to that.

I don't miss the pick-whip (I still have it in After Effects) but I did find it speedy to use when I used Encore.

I'm lovin the encore. Very easy to use. I could get right into it and work, not much "trying to figure s#!t out." And the customization is so so sweet with p-shop. I have to admit I started 10 yrs ago in college hating Adobe Premeire entirely. I had to teach it to fellow students working at our Media Resource Center. I loved avid, learned to love fcp. I bought cs4 a year ago and love everything about it. The templates are so useful in every way.
