or Sony RX10: What we've been looking for from Panasonic?

I like everything about this concept, but I'm still waiting to be impressed with the footage.
The rendering of skin tones didn't rock my world in this piece.
Neither did the over all aesthetic of the look.
But I've seen the same with a lot of C100/300, BMC, Gh3 footage.

I'd really like to see some well lit and exposed scenes with the camera setup to maximize it's potential - from what I gather from his post, JB used the Standard, 0, settings recommended by Sony.
We do a lot of doc work but I always have a small but complete LED package that we light all but the most instantaneous scenes with.
Too many unknowns to judge much still.

Much could have been done with the color and some selective focus on the post side.

Yeah, but who wants to deal with selective focus on the post side..especially for the run and gun form that it's suited for?
And dealing with some of those skin tones in post would not be very ideal.
I'm looking at this compared to what comes out of the GH3 and C100 - no post.
I think/hope it's more of a camera setup issue. When I shoot the GH3 at -5, -5, -2, -5 I get a better base image than what I'm seeing in this piece.

I'm a real fan of the concept and would love to grab one as a doc tool...if.
I've got to see a lot better quality than what I've seen from anything so far.
Not resolution, it already smokes a 5D for detail and lack of moire and could equal a GH3, but skin tones and overall IQ is the big question with the RX10 for me.
And this video did nothing to sway me.
Kind of sterile and videoish.

I went ahead and ordered one. If anything, it will be an awesome vacation and casual camera. I should get it tomorrow and put it through its paces.

Really like to hear your thoughts when you get it DL.
I was just discussing you and a few other online producer pals with my partner at lunch.
We come from opposite sides of the continent but share a lot of camera/lens experience with a lot of our work.

I'm just a little stuck right now.
I needed the GH3 for 60p with some projects last year so got it...and another.

Looking at this little doc reminded my of a piece I produced this year and, ironically, that featured Italian craftsmen - all the real image scenes were filmed on a 5D.
Looking at them side by side, there's no comparison.
Yeah, the RX10 has more native resolution and less moire, but absolutely none of the aesthetic.
If I showed them to a hundred people (not us, regular people) I'm sure they'd all say the same...and granted I light all of my work too.

Anyway, not to go on but I loved the look from the C100/C300 that I got to work with.
Still love the FF Canon look more in it's own right, but again, the "C" has just got it for me...in a way even more than a lot of Alexa footage.

So now I'm thinking of a new C100 or C300 and the RX10 to cover things and limit my number of camera/lens systems.
But I love the form factor of the GH3 <g>

Yeah, I have a GH2. I use it all the time with my Lumix 7-14.
I still do many videos with my HVX200 because on some shoots
I don't have time to change lenses and need to shoot audio
and B-roll of long form videos. I did try to shoot some of these
with my GH2 and lost audio sometimes and lack of a zoom
was driving the client nuts….
I think the RX10 could replace the HVX200.
I ordered one, so we will see.
I sold my Black Magic Pocket. I tried using it
as B-roll to my BMCC but the crop factor and
short battery life was a bummer.

I downloaded AR's video here. I must say, it looks pretty good! I would say Gh3 level. I can see that he used lots of post stabilization so my hopes are up for this camera.

Well after downloading the video I will have to agree with Andrew Reid's review comments "Their AVCHD codec on the RX10 has similar mud issues to the Panasonic GH1 (when it first came onto the market in 2009). Panasonic fixed this with b-frames and a better encoder on the GH2 just a year later whilst maintaining small file sizes of 24Mbit AVCHD.... Bottom line great lens and brain dead codec."

I think in a camera this nicely built Sony should have upped the codec to Panasonic GH3 standards. Andrew's footage was shot very well but the quality looked nothing like what I had hoped. Definitely not suited for professional work. After reading Andrew's review I am no longer interested in the RX10.

Interesting review by Andrew. However, early on, Andrew and many others complained of aliasing & moire with the GH3. Think we need more data from the RX10. Maybe Standard or Active IS was enabled for the condemned shots?

Camera just got dropped off. Pulled out of box and did my standard aliasing test. All IS features off set to 60P. I'M AMAZED. I shoot the house across the street that is flanked on all sides with pine trees to check for aliasing. Upon first inspection (charging battery so I had limited time) I see near zero aliasing! Sharp! Detailed! Also, the camera does not clip at 100%. Check out the waveform on my over exposure iris ramp. So far (again limited by battery) so good.

What about codec smear? PM me, we have a RX10 also and are doing settings tests.
Camera is charging. But I will say that the detail with all the auto stuff off rivals my C100. I just got the camera about 30 minutes ago so this is based on first impression. I will try and implement this camera on my shoot today where there will be lots of texture going on (real estate). I put the camera on neutral to start off with sharpening all the way down.

I agree about the level of detail matching our C100s. Still have Andrew's codec issue to put t bed or confirm. I wonder if the active electronic IS interferes with 60p more than 24p since it has to react after, with less time for careful recalculation?

Deep or Portrait at -3 contrast give me the most DR. More than neutral. Expanded DR at level 5 introduces too much noise. I leave it on auto DR.
