or Sony RX10: What we've been looking for from Panasonic?

Fixed lens = fail

While the DSLR movement was driven mainly by large sensors and shallow DOF, another reason why it is so popular is the interchangeable lenses. Before VDSL's there were no affordable video cameras with interchangeable lenses. Yes, there was the Canon XL1 and JVC equivalent but lens choice on these systems was very limited. The huge range of high quality stills lenses (both zooms and primes) available to DSLR users is a major advantage. While the RX10 lens looks great on paper, I don't want to be limited to one lens. For this reason, it's a non starter for me. While there is a definate market for a lens like the RX10s, It needs to be detatchable. I would love one for the GH3 if it is Parfocal and holds focus and aperture throughout the range without stepping. 24-200 2.8 with motor zoom and optical stabilizer would be a great documentary lens....... I'll take one without a camera please.

Though I'm a veteran of the GH2 & 3, I couldn't agree less...

You will never see a 24-200mm F/2.8 for an interchangeable lens camera as physics and economics dictate otherwise. The RX10 looks like the nearest alternative i.e. a parfocal stabilised 24-200mm F/2.8 lens with power zoom that happens to have a camera attached.

You seem to be making the mistake of thinking that we all have to choose just one camera. For the price of a decent lens if the video quality of the RX10 lives up to the specifications it's going to be a very useful tool in the arsenal.

since when does physics and economics have anything to do with the absurd expectations/desires of certain consumers

To each his own. If everybody followed this philosophy, I'll wager that a huge chunk of advancements in the material world would never have happened.

Think different......

Anyone care to speculate on the size, weight & cost of a mythical parfocal stabilised 24-200mm F/2.8 lens with power zoom for a MFT camera let alone a full frame camera?

Has anyone confirmed whether or not this has a crop/ETC mode like the GH2/GH3? Sorry if this was already answered, but can't seem to find it in the search.

my and nigel's post had nothing to do with advancements. it's basic physics and economics, someone saying they want the same lens for the same price in the same size BUT for a larger sensor, it's the same as asking for a magic flying carpet, because of physics and economics. some people just think lenses and cameras are all magical and that surely manufacturers can just make whatever they want and that they don't make the great stuff cheap not because it's expensive to make but because they want more money.(well, partly)

Advancements allow for SOME steps towards previously impossible things, but at a COST, and that there is the economics end which more and more often people just don't want to understand and will continue to wish/expect/demand/complain for what they want/think is easy for the price they want/can afford/think is fair without any practical knowledge of markets/R&D/QC/etc.....

I have shot with a Super 16 Canon 8-64mm, which is in full frame terms like used by the RX10 a 24-190mm lens. Love it, but it is large, 4.5 LBs, and about 10 inches long. Not as large as some of the Cookes, but the best that could be expected previously. Wish the great RX10 lens fed a better sensor processor with more DR. I bet we will see such a camera at NAB. I think this lens was designed for 4K, hence the superior resolution.

The possible Sony equivalent of GH2/3 ETC mode is Clear Image Zoom. With the RX100/100II this mode (CIZ) does not function in video mode. Since the RX10 video is sampling the entire sensor, I'm hopeful CIZ will work in video, but have found no evidence yet. Will be shooting the RX10 next week and this question is on my short list.

I never said anything about wanting the lens the same size or price. Obviously I don't want something the size of a Cooke bit id be willing to pay decent money for a 24-200 (equivalent) 2.8, Parfocal, internal zoom lens.

Be sure to post some good samples Dan...finally a man with an eye...and a tripod.

i would really be interested in seeing some footage with dro set to level 5 in some challenging hard light contrast situations.
when you get your hands on the camera do you have the means of telling if the hdmi output is 8 bot or 10 bit. I read somewhere it might be 8 bit plus 2 control bits which would render the talk about 10 bit to be indeed to good to true.

Set everything as flat as possible, -5, or whatever, and then examine DR in GRADED images.
with sony and the rx100 and rx100ii that means set dro to level 5, I am presuming I would have no more to hope for from the rx10.

to see what I mean go to dpreview and see the review for the rx100ii and go to the dynamic range section. play around with the options. in particular the photo where you can select the effect of the different dro levels. it really does not give you a whole
lot more dr but it does give you a lot higher values in the shadows. now if they would just give us raw shadow recovery in camera I would be a real happy camper and could easily live with only 8 bits coming out of the hdmi. or give me highlight recovery , I don't need both one or the other will do as once you have one you can get the other with exposure when it is in camera

Which tells us the Lumix lenses are seriously overpriced. C'mon Panasonic? If Sony can deliver an entire camera with three of the five required video features (below) on a 1" sensor for $1300, then surely you can give us a 4/3 28-200 lens for that same price.

'Video' lenses should have the following:
1. Constant 2.8 or better
2. Declicked iris ring
3. OIS

Zoom lenses for 'video' should also have:
4. Inner focus/zoom
5. Parfocal

Actually it has four of the five, since with AF it is effectively parfocal and there is no visible AF hunting so hard to tell the difference.
