or Sony RX10: What we've been looking for from Panasonic?

Short video testing out the RX10. Very impressed with this camera.

Just wondering if you guys have found the OIS on the RX10 to be somewhat weaker than the typical Sony OIS implementation? It seems that as you approach the far end of the zoom's reach, things get a bit jittery when hand held.

Yep. I find this handheld at the long end.

It does not come close to the superb OIS in the NX30, Actually pretty weak, especially if you turn off electronic OSX. To enhance image.

Ice Storm Dallas
Just got the RX10 on Tuesday - first chance to really record anything.

Whats going on with your 60p Slowmo? Make sure that when you drop a 60p clip in a 24p timeline that you are using the conform tool to slow down your footage. It looks like you are retiming the 60p footage in FCPX

Hey Christopher,

As of Monday I'll have the RX10 and the BMPCC to shoot together. Should be fun.
I got the BM Wed, but the new custom LCDVF doesn't get here till Monday with the Sony.
Probably best as it would have been tough working with two new cameras the same day. That would be a first even for me.

I did this knowing it was a tale of two techniques.
So far, I'm absolutely loving the minimalist approach of the BMPCC. So much like shooting a straight super 16 camera, no frills, awesome image.

By contrast, I got the RX10 as the complete little package that has everything but the DR and codec.

I think when Sony (or anyone) combines a BM quality sensor (sans moire) with RX10 features and form, I'll be a truly happy man.
Though playing with two cameras like these for a fraction of what I'd usually spend on one camera is making me really happy too.

Awesome. I'll return to the BMD cameras once the nasty moire is dealt with. They offer great image along with the codec, but the moire that pops up is what keeps me away for now. Plus the power hungry needs of the pocket camera concerning batteries/power solution along with limited SD card choice is another factor. I'm waiting to see what the BMC4k is capable of.

It is quite fun shooting with the RX10. Lots of power in a very small package. 24-200mm FOV in it's size is quite awesome. Took it to Disneyland yesterday with the fam and the camera performed and carried quite nicely.

You know, your Disney story just inspired me.
We're headed out to the Festival of Trees a big yearly event at a wonderfully restored 19th century theater - fund raiser, bar, artists, auction, awesome lights in a gorgeous little VT city. Even a little snow tonight.
We're kind of guests of honor after just completing the new museum in town but screw it, I just told my wife I'm bringing the BMPCC, the 12 and 45mm Olys and a Benro and I'm going to make a little film of it.

We'll see if I can make this little beast be an impromptu R&G system while having cocktails and giving a speech.
64GB card, four little batteries, my Kinotehnik doesn't get here till Monday so it will just be me and the screen and peaking.

I always carry a camera and the wife just has to deal with it. Yesterday at Disney it was difficult to shoot much because it was SO packed and we had some family in town. So I had to balance playing with the camera and entertaining family. I just wanted to see how the camera reacted in a situation of total CHAOS! I'll say this. I can't think of another camera that I have owned that I would have rather used.
Cameras:
5D's II and III
Sony VG10
HVX200
XF105
Gh2 and Gh3
BMCC (eos V1)
C100
RX100
RX10

Out of that list I will say that IF I had to shoot something like this with focus and assignment, the RX10 would be a major part of the tool kit. Small, discrete, fast, ease of operation, great zoom range, great AF, THE ZEBRAS AND THE ND, and a good image to boot.

I'll post what I got when it's uploaded. It's not much but the camera did do pretty well.

Ummmm.... Give the speech then have the cocktails :-)

Disney... Deep profile -3 / 0 /-3. AF on always. Standard IS. ISO all over the place but the night shooting is 1600-3200. Pirates of Caribbean is shot 3200 at 1/25th. Space Mountain is 3200 @ 1/50th.
Vimeo crushed blacks a tad.

I don't know - I did conform and it slowed it down 40%. The shutter speed was still 1/50. I think a higher shutter speed would help.

Yeah, that's what I noticed.
Basically you want your shutter speed to be twice your frame rate to mimic a 180 degree shutter angle for motion.
You want to shoot 60p with a 120 shutter speed to get the same 180 angle as you would doubling 24p to 48.

Thanks Christopher,
Some of these these images - merry-go-round, river boat, girl w/goat, saucers - are making me jazzed to get the camera Monday.
Knowing the circumstances, this is starting show the potential of this little unit.

Just got back from the event and yes, to my surprise and others, I did film a lot of scenes w/ the BMPCC.
Just downloading the footage.
About as compromising conditions as I'd ever shoot, so if it looks focused, let alone good, I'll be pleased.

Thanks for the Disney trip Christopher. It appears you had the place all to yourself :) Especially liked the cup ride clips.
