AC130: Option Menu in the 130

Does anyone know the exact description of the OPTION button per page 95 of the operating instruction booklet. I am having problems using firewire as the 1394 cable is not recognized and it may be the result of the OPT setting.

The OPT setting is a HIDDEN menu setting. The user must press both the MENU and DISPLAY button at the same time-a little tricky.

The OPTION menu relates to 1394 Status and configuration. I am trying to downconvert and also transfer material using the 6-pin firewire to another firewire appliance.

Amy help here would be appreciated.

You may already know this, but firewire is only active if you're recording DV. If the camera is in any HD mode, firewire will not work. And it's not going to work for file transfers at all; you use USB for that.

I honestly don't understand why camera companies continue to release products that only support USB 2.0 for file transfer, when the far faster USB 3.0 has been available now for quite some time.

The Nikon D800 is the only still camera that I know of that supports USB 3.0 But why camcorders are not including it at all, and are still being shipped just supporting USB 2.0, is a mystery to me.

Correct. I beta test editing software for a company. I used DV material and can not get the 1394 output to function. There is a hidden OPTION menu where DISPLAY and MENU buttons are pushed together to bring up the hidden OPTION menu. Then, there is a strange 1394 setting (s) with a group of numbers. The manual states nothing on the actual operation. I think the non-compliance could be related to a user setting as it relates to FireWire. I used all three DV settings. Any help would be appreciated so I can isolate a software vs. hardware issue while testing. Thanks.

The menu exists, but I can't think of a single case on this forum in the last 10 years where anyone has ever had to adjust anything in it. It's just never come up.

The first thing to do would be to try to verify that the hardware is working at all. Try a different cable, and verify that the port on the computer is working, or plug in the camera directly to another camera and see if you can see the output from one, on the other's LCD. I would strongly suspect a hardware issue before I'd suspect that there's some setting in the option menu that needs changing.

just want to make sure you know:
The firewire output is when you PLAY the SD clips from the computer (and NLE captures footage)--- not connect as a storage device to computer and transfer files.
USB port will see the camera as a storage device to transfer file.

If using Win7: be sure to use Legacy 1394 drivers.
