General Optical Low Pass Filter swap project (to reduce moire and aliasing)

Generally speaking, from these low res stills, it looks soft all around.

What do you think?

Softer than a 7D in the same conditions? I would vote yes. what are you using picture profile wise?

Any lighting you could toss at it?

These aren't low res stills. These are crops from a 1080p frame. I'm using the standard profile I think. I had the marvels cine 1.2 profile but it wasn't available in video mode. I don't have any additional lighting in the house at the moment.

Yup, thanks for trying the experiment and sacrificing your camera (partially at least) for it.

One thing, our of curiosity, could you shoot the same chart in crop mode? Or has it been confirmed elsewhere that crop mode eliminates aliasing & moiré?

Edit: And you said the profile wasn't available in video mode... You mean custom curves don't work for video on the 550D? That's a real bummer if so.

Thank you for the quick test! Those stills unfortunately look very similar to res charts I've shot with the same lens.

Yeah, looks like still tons of aliasing.

Okay, so here's the great thing -- because they damaged the sensor, they're replacing it, yes? You can probably have them plug in the original OLPF and get back to square one while they're at it, right?

Yeah, we have an agreement that if it doesn't work out, I can go back to factory. Did you still want to test it anyway just to see whats different? I don't mind.

If you'd like, I'd be happy too. Looking at the charts though, it doesn't look any different than what I get from the 7D. So, it's up to you.

Disappointing, thanks again for doing all of this, it sounds like they had some trouble with your camera! Would a more perfectly matched OLPF make a difference? Maybe 1080 or 720? Too bad we didn't see any improvement.

Who knows? In theory, yes, but there are too many unknowns.

Wouldn't it be possible to put some slightly defused transparent plastic film over the sensor? Like one of the layers of an LCD monitor.

Hey shaoaholica...good on you for being the test subject. Much appreciated. I think them mistakenly dropping the filter on your sensor was a blessing in disguise however. Now we know it didn't work...and as someone suggested you can get the filter placed back on if you decide to send it back. But anyways....I am also curious myself in how much of a difference this made from the stock setup.

Personal opinion is that much of the aliasing/moire is caused by line skipping and the OLPF would have to somehow be matched precisely to how the skipping is done. I don't think it's going to work out quite like that for us, but again - it was really cool of you to try the experiment. I would have contributed to a paypal fund or something to buy you a 2nd camera if it did work.

Maybe its just me and my lack of experience with this camera but it looks like the aliasing is only bad in one direction, vertically. I hardly see anything horizontally. This is especially apparent between the first and last picture where the difference in angle is ~90 degrees. I'm not sure if this is just how the stock camera performs or not.

That's actually not a bad idea. Would folks be into helping him defray the costs of the experiment? As it stands now, shaocaholica is probably out 400 bones or so, I think enough of us are interested, that we could help out, what do folks think?

Seems to further support the line-skipping notion.

Yes, the aliasing is much, much, much worse vertically than it is horizontally. There is some horizontal, but the vertical is the bad stuff.

I'd help out.
