Operating P2CMS?

OK, so I'm trying to embrace the P2 workflow and I can see that the future is a digital workflow. Tape is as dead as film is.

But...

Here's my experiment so far.
Shoot on HPX500 with four 16GB cards.
Got myself a Lacie 160GB portable firewire drive.
Transferred via firewire 400 from the camera direct to the Lacie.
Transferred from the Lacie to my Mac G5 via firewire 800.
Used import P2 on Final Cut Pro with NO problems..hey this is cool!

So, I read about the PCMCIA problems (no slot on new Macs, adapter seems iffy, Panasonic solutions are expensive, my wallet is empty, etc.).
The idea of using a PC laptop is appalling to a long time apple user, but after sleeping on it, I decided to abscond with my wife's HP Pavilion ze 5400. It has the PCMCIA slot, a 250GB HD, Pentium 4 2.66GHz, 400MB of ram, yadda, yadda, yadda.

I downloaded the drivers and P2CMS and the .pdf manual from the Six Bullets web site. Installed OK. Inserted the P2 card, launched P2CMS, navigated to the P2 card and viola, there are the thumbnails. Select one, control P and the viewer pops up and it plays pretty good (standard definition media) fight off the card.

I select all and click on "Ingest". Here's where it gets tricky. The ingest process takes about 90 minutes. Must be something wrong.

That's when I consult the "manual". This must be the most terribly written set of instructions that I have ever seen. It's written in poorly translated engrish and doesn't explain WHY any of the procedures are to be performed. Hey PANASONIC, let's get this fixed!

Questions,
What is ingest for?
What is the database used for?
What is the function of register?
Why is it that after ingest, I can't play the clips off the HD?
What is "register"?
What is archive and is it different that export?
Since I'm using FCP (no Raylight), I'm guessing that P2CMS is overkill. If so what should I use to transfer P2 data from the cards to the internal HD to the portable FW drive to the G5?
IMPORTANT-What can I do to improve the performance of my laptop?

Any other tips would be appreciated.

Rich

BTW- I received the rebate check today, about 4 weeks after I sent in the paperwork.
