It's funny how these guys have massive budgets, and all the equiptment anyone could ever need, and they can't shoot an actor actually riding a bike. hmmm, lol

Im kidding, it looks like thier going after a slow moving shot, so slow, that it may be difficult to stay up on the bike. so here you go, granny wagon

Process shots, and the seemingly extensive rigging that accompany them, assures continuity and repeatability. Process work is simply a portable extension of scene blocking.

Thats how i'd want to shoot it. If the actor doesnt have to worry about balance ( wich by the way not everyone can ride a bike) they can worry about performnce.

I've never seen one of these in use before so I have a quick question.

How difficult is it for the actor/actress to keep a natural pedal cadence? Looks like the chain is still on, so does the tow vehicle move just ever-so-slower then the ideal biking pace so the talent can keep pressure on the pedals at all times and have it look/feel natural? Is that something they have to test before hand?

maybe she is actually propelling herself...and vehicle is just a guide...because i'd imagine its pretty doable to just pedal cuz the 2 front wheels are there for balance.

What you can't see, is the pole on the bicycle is connected to a flat bed fitted with 1/2 a ton of speed rail and HMI's galore!

Welcome to the big leagues. And guess what... they also have permits! Ohhhh, ahhhhh. :)

They arent shooting on a DSLR..... They are elitists....

can someone explain "process shots" for me pls?

I googled it. Apparently it used to mean those shots where the actors are filmed in front of a projection screen to make it look like they're driving through traffic. Now it can mean, I guess, any shot where the actor is supposedly in a vehicle of some kind but is really on some type of rig.

I admit that whenever I see a photograph of one of these process shot set-ups, I think, what an overblown waste of time and money! But Hollywood is always doing it this way, so there must be at least somewhat good of a reason. I can think of three:

1. As TimurCivan said, the actor can concentrate on just acting --- as opposed to driving and acting.
2. As Erik Olson said, the crew can do ten takes and keep the camera angle, lighting, background, consistent across them all.
3. As has not yet been mentioned, yet is probably the main reason, for the safety of movie stars. We have already seen the effect of cell phones and texting on driving. Imagine if Julia Roberts had to drive and got into a wreck. Or even just fell off her bike and scraped up her face. When you're paying her $20 million, or if the movie production is costing you half a million or more a day, it's just not worth the risk of losing a day or a week or even having to recast a part and shoot everything over. The producer would say to you, "What! She got hurt because you had her drive a real car just because you didn't want to set up a process shot? You're fired!" So you set up this crazy contraption so all the actor has to do is ride.

Hurt or killed, as happened on the set of Transformers 3. Apparently safety is of little concern to Michael Bay.

Their BTS stuff always looks incredibly risky with principals doing a lot of "physical acting" (Harrison Ford coined-it) in very close proximity to heavy (often airborn) equipment. This is seemingly the rule, not the exception.

Some 21st century process p*rn. It doesn't get cooler than these guys. Jib envy. Remote envy. Process car envy. Basically the greenest color on multiple counts.
