finally trying diy DOF Adapter

n1c02

Well-known member
hi guys. adpter alot of reading. I am trying to build my own DOF adapter.
I am still relaly new to all of this. but I am following the instructions from

http://home.comcast.net/~wauhkies/adapter/index.html

but I have a few questions/problems is anyone can help me out

Ill list what parts I have

I have the pvc that he specified to get

I also hav ethe DVX100a

I bought two Canon 52mm UV filters
Somia 72mm +10 macro
now the focusing lens that I am testing this with im not even sure tha it will be ok to use

I got the lens and mount from an old Canon EOS Rebel 3mm
the lens on this says

Cacon Lens EF 50mm 1:1.8 II

first off, will this lens even work for this project or should I try for something else..

Second. I put the entire thing on my camera (no taping, painting ) jsut screwed together and screwed to the camera.
Looks like the camera is looking down a tunnel. I dont get a full screen/frame on the LCD. looks like a circle..

Is this something I am doing , if so, can anyone help me and point me in the right direction...

Just trying to learn as I go. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks
Terry

You have to zoom in with the camera to fill the frame with image from the GG.

Are you planning on trying the wax to make the GG?

Yes I am going to try the wax first. Are there other methods?

Do I have to zoom all the way? I was thinking that the adapter would keep me from having to zoom in as I have to do that to achieve dof with jsut the native dvx100.

wax

wax

Ive been trying the wax method and I dont really care for it. Too hard to get it right. I am using one of the wax paper type cd cases(the soft ones) and it seems to at least give me something solid/even to work with to test.

I did zoom in some just enough to get around the 2" pvc that the macro lens is connect to. But when I attach the camera lens at the end seems I have to zoom in alot more to get away from the tunnel/circle look. At thi spoint I am almost at full zoom. Is there any other way around this?

Thanks

The "waxy type" cd case wont work since on close inspection the diffusion is too thick and irregular. Your footage would turn too foggy or milky in appearance.

To get close to the ideal GG area close to a 35mm negative, you would need a good quality achromat.

NOT a close up filter.

NOT the cheap indian made achromats on ebay. (too much CA)

I recommend the SGpro or the cinevate achromats which you can buy separately.

I found the cd case didnt work either. I am gongi to try the wax method again. Just not sure how to get rid of the tunnel lool either. I am starting to understand what everyone means by losing light(stops) i think it is called. When i use this adapter

Here's my experience on this. The static wax method, while simple in theory is actually so hard in the end. The reason is the tolerances you're dealing with.
First, dust and imperfections. Static GG will easily show this. A subtle spec becomes HUGE on screen.

Light loss and diffusion. This is so difficult to DIY in the wax method. The right diffusion and bokeh is so tricky with the kind of wax and construction method you use.

Durability and maintenance. I found that if not made well the wax diffusion sometimes change with extreme temps and might crack and cake with mishandling.

Whereas vibrating or spinning, the grain and dust issue is minimized. Spinning has more tolerance over vibrating with regards to dust and grain handling. I'm speaking on these things with respect to DIYs and not as an argument starter with branded adapters.

Spinning is easier to DIY than vibrating.

You can use a "coarser" GG with spinning/vibrating than with static since once its moving its "smoothened".

A frosted CD case can yield great results than the waxy CD case when coupled with the right achromat.

The tunnel look is removed with the right mix of achromat+zoom on dvx+distance of achromat to GG.

Tell me once you have an achromat and you know its power and i can give you the approximate distance it should be from the GG.

Thats a good guide. But when going down to the fine tuning thats when all DIYs get "exciting".

This mediachance dof guide gives you the basic idea of construction.

The defty part is accurately getting the flange distance according to camera lens mount, and GG to achromat distance according to achromat power.

You can save yourself a lot of time with spinning.

I got a Verbatim frosted CD case and this is the result.

The scenes with slight vignette is due to the slow 15-30mm f3.5-4.5.

Terry, i did start making my adapter for our dvx100. when HD became mainstream i modified it for the HDcamera.

I also used the mediachance dof tutorial as my initial guide. Then joined this forum and another for help from others in the fine tuning phase.

I documented my progress on my first forays into adapters in this thread.

More threads on my progres which i hope can also be useful to you.

Ok. Im going to attempt to build this one....

I didnt have too much luck with the wax one. not that its not a workable solution. as I said im really new and trying to learn as I go..

Thanks

still going

I am wondering. When yuo said frosted cd case. Did you mean you used a frosted clear cd? if so where can I find one.. Or did you cut a frosted cd case into the shape of a cd and use that...

Thanks
Terry

Wow. I have to say . I didnt realize how much light you lose when using a DOF adapter

Terry,

The back part of a frosted cd case is what i used, i cut into a disc and mounted it on a motor.
