Only getting 1080i out of HDMI

This weekend I bought an 1080p HDTV to use as a monitor, but when I plugged in my 7D and when I plugged in my laptop, both via HDMI the TV would only give me 1080i, not 1080p (which looked super crappy).

I took the TV back and went to Best Buy and brought my camera with HDMI cable attached in with me to test other TVs before I purchased and was getting the same thing, only 1080i.

Is this a limit of the particular HDMI cable I have (or HDMI cables in general) or am I just testing it on TVs that happen to be falsely advertising 1080p?

There's nothing "falsely" going on. It outputs 1080i. Pretty much every camera on the market will output 1080i or 720p; I can't think of one offhand, certainly not one in the consumer/prosumer price bracket, that outputs 1080p.

It is funny that tapeless players like WDTV or Asus O!Play can output 1080p60 as well as 1080p24 for 24p sources, while being sold for only $100 or so.

BTW, JVC camcorders upconvert to 1080p60 via HDMI, but what is the point? A TV will do it no worse, and these camcorders shoot interlaced only anyway.
