I'm planning on using OnLocation to capture footage and would like to have as much slack in the tether to my laptop as possible. What's the maximum length of firewire cable people are using?
A lot depends on the volume of the data stream. With DVCPRO HD (100Mb/s), 15' (aka, 4.5 meters) is the maximum safe length w/o repeaters. If you're shooting DV or HDV (25Mb/s), you can go longer--I've had no problems with 25' cables and have heard of people using 40'50' without issues.
Thanks Noah and Mark. I was looking at the 15 foot version but just wanted to make sure no was having trouble with that length. I had no idea that you can go 25 feet plus if you shoot HDV -- or even 50 feet. Wow! That would provide a lot of slack. That's good information to have.
