Hey Everyone,

I'm having trouble getting my laptop to see my camera on a 20m FW lead im running the powered datavideo repeater, it works when i plug it into a FWPCI card on a desktop, but not the onboard FW and not my laptop (i tryed two FW Ports, Motherboard and a PCMCIA Card) any idea should I buy a 10m instead ?

Firewire 400 recommended max length is about 4.5 m.

If the video capture is valuable to you, make it shorter. If you are only using On-Location for monitoring, then try the 10m and let us know.

All FW ports are not created equal, so it sounds like the desktop port is better than the onboard laptop. You might also check the hardware status on your 1394 ports.

I have done runs that long. You need to buy or rent FireWire repeaters. I have rented Kramer repeaters from Band Pro. Like everyting else, you just need the right gear.

You've had better luck than I with On location for recording a full DVCPRO HD stream. It seems to be forgiving for monitoring with longer firewire cable, but terribly sensitive and unforgiving for recording. It only takes a small glitch to error off.

If repeaters work for recording mode, then I will give it a try.
