"Neil Gorringe has directed ‘Street Summer’, the brilliant new promo for Channel 4 and 4 Creative. Produced by Shananne Lane at 4 Creative, the film celebrates the best of British street culture and showcases an assortment of hip-hop artists, street dancers and urban sport professionals each doing what they do best. MPC provided the post, helping to bring the stylised vision to life. From the very outset the director wanted the ability to seamlessly zoom in and out on each performer as the camera pans around the street itself, all the while maintaining a unified look and the same feel and aesthetic of Google’s Street View. Led by VFX Supervisor Michael Gregory, the team set to work to complete the complex task.
The team did a number of early tests to try and find the best method for fulfilling the director’s vision. In the end, they worked out a technique that involved shooting with a 8mm lens and various primes that would then be stitched together and projected onto a sphere. From this they were then able to create any camera move they wanted and stitch the plate to the live action longer lens plate.
The promo itself was shot using 3 Red cameras shooting at 4k. One camera setup was a mirror rig with two Red cameras with a 18mm and a longer prime; the other at 8mm.
The team would then undistort the 18mm plates and composite them into the 8mm 9k resolution LatLong stitch. Once all the camera moves were applied they added zooms and composited the various static passers by that were shot on 8mm. They then matched the Google warp by closely studying the way it tears, blurs and distorts the image between the 2 plates, to create the right feel and style.
Other tasks for the team included color matching the plates, sky replacement and various clean up work. They also added the billboard and created a CG chopper.
George K provided the grade, matching the different camera formats and keeping the colours consistent despite the weather changes."

Wow... that was a nice promo! UK rap... well whatever, the promo rocks!
Although, with technology evolving and getting cheaper... I wonder if you couldn't do something similar with 2 cameras attached to one-another, using sweep panorama (Sony) and a Red 4k.
Thanks for the post!
