One Reason to get the 5D over all

OMG! LOL...........

People have been posting clips and stills from the 5DMark II for over 8 months.... This is nothing new...

It's about time the heads are coming out; 4 months from almost a year though..... :-)

Ok just to clarify the still image posted in this thread of the guy that looks like the 40 year old virgin is a still from a 1080p30 video stream? Not from the regular camera? If so how can we see more of the video and get some more info on lenses? Sorry I just want to be absolutely sure about what I am seeing.

Hey Nik,

LoL @ 40 Year Old Virign. Yes, to be clear that is a still ripped right from Quicktime.

Settings: Faithful Dialed down to taste (no sharpening, mild saturation, mild contrast, just the way I like it)
Lens: Zeiss Contax 125/2.8 @ 2.8~4 Split
Shutter: looked about 1/40
ISO: I remember seeing 640 but I'm honestly not sure at all
WB: Manual @ 3700K (still off, sadly. Should have been much less warm)

The video I can't show, unfortunately. Not until it's released. Stills are as far as I can get.

I'll post up some footage from a personal project this week as soon as I can. Gotta get the GH-1 stuff edited first. Almost done... oi.

Welcome to the revolution. It is quite an amazing camera - biggest revolution I've seen since the VX-1000. And yes sunburst it blows my mind that it costs LESS than what I paid for a VX-2000, FX7, FX1 etc. But I'm not burning my videocamera either. Still plenty of good basic video to shoot with that stuff.

If Canon's video division got their hands on the 5D before it was released they would have added XLRs and charged $7000 for it.

And one thing you might notice from Kholi's shot is that it DOESN'T have that hyper-HD crushed black look that you see with most of the 5D footage that is all over the place. There are picture profiles that allow you to create a much more "film-like" relaxed image. It just seems many people shoot with the stock settings. Kholi's shot looks much more natural and neutral. Not that I hate the hyper HD look but it's not right for everything.

Seriously. "" Everybody "" What a broad and mater of fact statement that is.

Can we say Fallacy!

No offense to Kholi: However, he is a Johny come lately when it comes to the 5D MII. The 5D is within 4 months of being a year old since it's announcement. There has been plenty of good material from the 5D since 2008; and way before Kholi's gave it his blessing.

Jesus Christ! Can we have a reality check here.............

I'm starting to believe this place is the actual fu*kng Twilight Zone! Cause only Rod Serling could 've come up such a cast of characters....

That's honestly whats been turning me off of the MKii. Just like people get turned off of the GH-1, because a lot of footage feels like it represents, completely, the camera. It isn't true, even I know that but it's hard ot break out of that mindset.

As many stills as I've seen, Elton Barlow's stills are the ones that made me jealous in general. They were hella resolute for video stills and I had only seen that from RED.

I also couldn't STAND the white balance in most footage. In fact, I'm still displeased that my image came out so warm in comparison to the RED footage we shot side-by-side, but it's all a learning process.

So that's why I'm surprised, regardless of how many months the camera has been out I still hadn't seen anything (with the exception of a literal handful of people) that outright killed as far as color representation went, contrast, etc. That's just me. I know that everyone else has flipped over it, but not me personally until I've had a chance to make it my own and do what I like with the camera.

I also hadn't been in a position to use my own glass when I did use the MKii a few times, was always the kit lens or some other Canon glass. This also helps me really get in touch with the camera's image.

Sorry man.

Good grief, who cares anyways? Kholi's just saying he likes the cam, that's all. I've admired that cam from a far for awhile too. Not until this firmware update came out was I going to get one. And now I'm getting one. That's what Kholi has apparently already been saying.

Chill out people.

Sorry man.

It's not you Kholi, your cool; however your still the sugared up hyper kid in class with a manageable ADD. JK-ing......

It's just that this is nothing new. I and many many others have tested the MII a long time ago, and knew it's potential in 2008. Nothing has changed about the camera's abilities, until a few hours ago. So the overwhelming and extraordinary footage since 2008 has spoke for itself long ago....

That's pretty much it. It was a statement that above any other reason to buy the camera, the stills that you can rip from the timeline or the actual still capabilities are incredible.

I shot with an MKii long before now, just didn't like what I had gotten out of it and wasn't really all that impressed with footage. That's just me.

Had the camera Manual Controls in the beginning I would have gotten one myself. Just didn't happen like that. =B

There are many of us whom have not looked at the Canon 5D seriously until now because it shot 30p with no manual controls at a rather high price. But now that it has manual controls, it seems like a much better deal.

Many of here are familiar with Kholi's perspective on things. And it's no twilight, but not everyone here subscribes to a million different forums.

And Kholi is right, there is very little narrative work to show for the 5D. The only one that comes off the top of my head is Vincents work. But that is about to change with this manual release.

So thanks Kholi for sharing your experience, I'm looking forward to hear peoples reviews/thoughts on the firmware upgrade, as I'm thinking to buy one.

Seriously. "" Everybody "" What a broad and mater of fact statement that is.

Fixed it. Just typing too fast and not editing enough.

There has been plenty of good material from the 5D since 2008; and way before Kholi's gave it his blessing.

Like Laforte's video (which happens to use the crushed black standard 5D look). You get more excited about the 5D's image when you shoot something yourself and see that it really does look that good.

Has Kholi given the 5D his blessing? I think he's had it 1 day.
.

LOL you guys are crazy. I've said so many times that it was obvious that the MKii had the superior 1080 image. I saw that the first time Elton Barlow posted a Video Still from the camera. He also sent me some 1080 footage of an ATV in the snow and I went to Samy's Camera the next day to buy one.

Only, they were out.

Not to long after that we werented one for some pick-up shots and it just wasn't all that good. Perhaps because I was stuck with that 28-200 zoom instead of using my favorite glass. It was still awesome 1080, but just not what I liked in an image.

Now I have manual controls, Zeiss Adapters and my Glass, I've personalized the camera as much as I could possibly do, tweaking every single color profile, and I shot something with it. Right between a pair of RED ONEs.

The GH-1 is still on my top list, my point was just that the stills from video and actual stills taken is probably the number one reason to grab this sucker.

I could probably dig up several posts stating already that the MKii had the superior image. Nothing's changed. Haha. Well, aside from Manual Controls.

Oh, by the way Troutman: I've had it since Friday. xD

thanks for the welcome. Actually I've been puttering with my HV20, etc, and not
even coming to this forum till I caught wind of the GH1.

As for DV, well I'd already shot film- before that came along. I got
caught reluctantly into following the flow, by all the DV "cheerleaders", that it was so great. { I won't mention any names.. } I still tend to wince when I have to
edit it.

the gh1 is starting to be dissapointing to me . although its pointed me to whats
happening.

as for the 5d, of course I'm waiting for 24p.

If so, this may be the first camera where I don't feel Im having to make heartwrenching comprimises to my vision. wake me up!

5Dii is strong, no doubt. But it still doesn't have 24P (and my guess is that if it does it will be wrapped in 60i due to the 60hz timing of the sensor). It will never have 60P. It doesn't have an flip out LCD. It will always have jello, and it costs close to $3000 (after taxes). The GH1 had a chance to best it, but the Panny dropped the ball on that big time with their crap codec. So now I wait for the 'next' cam (60D? D400?) until we get a combo of 24P, minimal jello, manual controls, and a lower price. Someone will do it, and at the rate things are developing I don't think I'll have too wait long.
