C100: One Focal Length

Hi all, I've decided to do some stripped back filming with my C100 just for fun and to see what can be done with not much kit. So I'm going to set the iso at say 2000, ditch the side and top handle and use a small mic for some audio. I'm going to choose one manual prime (Nikons with aperture rings), still unsure on which one though....I have in my kit a 17mm 3.5, 24/2, 35/2.8, 50/2 and a 135/ 2.8...........Which one would you choose???????

24 2.0 or 35 2.8. Many films have been done with single focal lengths in those ranges. I'm doing a similar thing, just bought a Nikon D5200 and I have the 35 1.8G. I think the 17, while being nice and wide would be a bit limiting, and the 50 + 135 would be limiting the other way around.

When it is one lens and handheld, I go for EF 24-105 f4 L IS with the C300.

It gives me the focal length and helps me getting the shots without intruding into someone's personal space.

That's cheating!!!!!! The task is one focal length only.....smileyface!

Kind of depends on what your shooting, but the 24/f2 would be what I would choose because of camera shake and focal length. But since it seems like an exercise why not all of them.

24 is my favorite, but 28 might be a nice compromise if you're limiting yourself to just 1 focal length, and 35 is certainly more than capable. I'd be happy with anything in that range.

For mark iii

chaotic situation - 35mm

general situation - 50mm

for my c100

chaotic - 24mm

general - 35mm

cheat is 1.4 -2.8 ! 24-105 is ****, why ? cuz 1.4 - 2.0 you immediately create a frame from anywhere ! but for F4, its so hard to find a interesting frame.

general saying (off topic), you need more budget for 24-105 shots cuz you need to arrange details, backgrounds etc. a lot harder than 1.4 !

but shooting faces I like around 2.0 with 85mm.

The reason I'm not going to use all of them is because I mainly shoot run and gun for a living so zooms are my thing, so I am going to bail on two of the lenses to put towards a Siggy 50-150 2.8 os. Thinks I'm leaning towards the 24/2 for a little width on landscapes. Good discussion though....carry on.

dude I should say prime can do Run n gun as well, keeps you creative.

dont know you but Im lazy when using zooms, footage is a lot less engaging than prime.

if its documentary or TV show you are doing then 24-105 or 17-55 is a no brainer.

but if your run n gun means things like events, then I suggest you bring 2-3 primes, you got time bro !

Firstly this site won't let me use my enter button!!!! Yeah i'm on the doco tip. I pretty much only shoot fishing for a living so I need the zooms to re-frame super quick as everything happens so fast...So parfocal and "actual" constant apertures are for me...So that rules out most of the Canon zooms unfortunately. I use the Tamron 17-50 2.8 (non vc) for most of my work but am thinking of swapping it our for the sigma 17-50 with os and getting the 50-150 os for some reach. Just want to hold a wider prime or two and invest in a 300 plus tc or similar for some nature/ surfing work I'm planning on.

I have a Rokinon 35 1.4. I use it for general event filming. It's a pleasure whenever you have low light situations with the c100

I use 90% of the time primes and would go also for the 35mm.
BUT... I've just ordered the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8. Thats a neat focal length.

The Sigma 50-150 is a really good lens. I think it's my second favorite. My new fav is the Sigma 18-35.
Its almost like having an 18, 24, 28, and 35 primes as its a F1.8 and sharp wide open.

In weddings my favorite focal length for my C100 is 50mm. I had Canon 35mm f/1.4 and found myself not using it at all with C100 and sold it. My 80% wedding footage is from 50mm and 85mm. If I had to choose only one lens for C100 it would be 50mm.

35mm......
+1

Though, if the choice were between a 28 and a 24, I may end up with a 24. I may learn to love the 28 again (and i do like it on the ff35 a bit more), but 'as is' I find it is neither here nor there on the s35 format.

It may be a very straight forward and practical field of view, meaning it is wide, while not being too wide. But 35 makes close ups and mediums better, and the 24mm is better for wides, while more stylized on close ups and mediums. The 28mm messes with peoples faces on the close up too subtly, and still doesn't do very good on the wides.
