Once Again, no Rush in the Rock Hall of Fame

Sigh.... I know it's just an arbitrary popularity contest. But come on.

http://apnews1.iwon.com//article/20090923/D9AT11100.html

There have even been recent articles about in Time and MSNBC

Only 3 acts that have more consecutive gold albums. Find me a serious musician that's already in the HoF that does not respect both their musicianship and their impact, even if they aren't a personal fan. Plus they are still on tour. The only band I can think of that has had a longer-running line-up is ZZ Top.

And Jethro Tull? Forget the stuff you her on radio (well, not really), there has never been a band who was able to master more forms of music (blues, jazz, folk, rock, progressive, pseudo-classical) than they have.

I'm not a RUN DMC fan, but I can see why they are in there because of their impact. Same with the Stooges being nominated. So it's not just because I'm a fan.

jeeeez.

Rush will be there. I'm not worried.

Jethro Tull beating out Metallica for the first ever heavy metal Grammy was a farce.

I will never forget that night. I am a huge fan of both bands, but that was ridiculous. It was the grammy folks being too afraid to let Metallica on stage. But that was the first year for the category, IIRC.

Nah, it was because Metallica sold out and went mainstream by that point. :)

RUSH rules!

I've never had a taste for Rush (quite the contrary) and so, admittedly, this news was a bit amusing to me (no offense intended to fans). In any case, the MSNBC article quotes Joel Peresman, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc. as follows:

“It’s not really that this one sold this many albums or this many tickets,” explains Peresman. “It’s really ‘What’s the significance of that artist? And why should they be inducted?’”

What is the significance of Rush?

Rush has managed to stay out of the Limelight, at least as far as the R&R hall of fame goes. That's not to say there are not certain Subdivisions of the panel who would like to vote them in. It's not worth starting a Witch Hunt to find out who voted for who.

You really have to handle these nominations with Kid Gloves. The judges must have over 2112 bands/artists to choose from each year. If you ask me, I think there is some (Main) Monkey Business when it comes to the voting.

As for their popularity, they still earn The Big Money, and I'd be hard-pressed to find a Working Man who doesn't listen to them. (You can't say that about every Fly By Night band that has come and gone since the early 70's) Either you love their Chemistry or you don't.

Winning the R&R Hall of Fame would be One Little Victory, but if you ask me, I don't think they stand A Ghost of a Chance.

1,000th post. No video. I had big plans, but no time to put it together. :(

Well, in my formative years, I fancied myself a musician. During that time (the 80's mostly), nearly every musician I talked to talked about Rush with great respect, whether they liked them or not. Their musicianship was in the highest reaches of rock music. Musician's magazines like Guitar Player awarded them honors year after year. Every album pointed in a new direction. They ignored the mores of AOR boundaries. Their lyrics were intelligent attempts at poetic descriptions of the state of modern man. In a nutshell they expanded the realm of rock music. Bands like Tull, ELP, and Yes did this as well. But Rush is a personal favorite of mine and I think that they should get extra points for doing it as a cohesive trio since their second album over 30 years ago.

The problem is that, like many bands, their best stuff is unknown outside of their fan base. You won't hear LaVilla Strangiato, Circumstances, Analog Kid or Xanadu on FM radio.

I would have to say that they are more significant than LL Cool J or the Dave Clark 5 in the big picture.

Well done

What is the significance of Rush?
What is the significance of any band or any music for that matter?

I don't know, maybe creativity, originality, longetivity, inspirational, role model behaviour and I'm sure others.

Their Signifigance?
As was stated earlier, their musicianship? Few bands can say that they have influenced other musciains as they have. They are known from top to bottom as some of the greatest musicians on Earth. Like the music or not , they have a special place in the hearts of any musician worth their salt.....

They are very accomplished musicians.

I think the problem may be lack of soul. I mean, I'd rather hear music played from the heart with a few missed notes rather than cold precision any day.

If you ask any drummer who the best drummer of all time is/was... it will come down to Buddy Rich or Neil Peart. To me that's significant... a guy who is arguably the best drummer of all time... then, that same guy, also happens to be an excellent writer... music or otherwise. Listen to spirit of radio... the music and the lyrics... (among many others)... it's beautiful... and rocks, at the same time.
