On Location issue...

Anybody experience a no video output/green screen issue when hooked into On Location on the HVX? I'm going firewire in (obviously), and I believe all my settings are accurate-- I'm set to P2 mode on the camera, and all I get is a solid green overlay/no video in On Location. Funny thing is, if I switch the camera to DV mode, BAM... picture shows up. Any ideas as to what gives? Thanks guys... last minute troubleshooting here days away from production, much appreciated if anyone can help.

After some furious researching, I discovered that the HVX will NOT ouput anything over firewire when in any 720pN mode (I was set to 720 24pn.) Panasonic is actually completely aware of this drawback. I haven't tried it yet, but when I'm back on location today for pre-production, I have a strong feeling it'll take nothing more than switching the cam to a standard progressive or "pa" mode to solve my problem. Thanks anyway guys!

As you've found out, the firewire port only outputs an NTSC (or PAL) signal.

The nice thing about OnLocation is that it will strip out the duplicate frames for you when you shoot in 24pA modes -- so essentially you are getting the benefit of shooting in native modes in the end.

yeah, it doesn't output anything to firewire in Native modes,

but onlocation can take care of that for you anyway, so it ends up being the same thing.

So is every HVX user who reads the manual, or the HVX Book. This has been known from day one, and it was designed that way to comply with existing SMPTE transport protocols.

That is correct, you must use the 720p (not pN) mode if you want the signal to transport through the firewire port.

And even then it depends on settings in OnLocation whether the duplicate frames are recorded or not. If OnLocation is set for AVI Type 1, the frames are NOT recorded; if set for AVI Type 2, the frames ARE recorded.

Before shooting something important, experiment and confirm that your editing and other post-processing tools support your chosen format.
