on board audio 7D

In other words if you want pro sound- you want to use an external mic and an external recorder like a Zoom or the like.

Thanks again. I'm on a budget. I thought I would get a $200 shotgun and boom pole this month and use my mixer with onboard sound until next month when I can get the Zoom. I'm wondering now should I spend more on the mic?

Problem is you're stuck with automatic gain control- really the onboard 7D audio is totally useless. Any digital audio recorder will be much better. For $150 you could get the M-Audio MicroTrack II for example...
