GH3 Olympus m4/3 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro Kit Lens will Ship with the New OM-D EM-1 Pro Camera

I'm glad they are pairing it with this newer lens. The older 12-60mm kit lens does not do the camera justice. However, video is still not on par with the GHx cameras despite what seems like relatively good in-body stabilization in video mode.

For me the lack of OIS will still push me to the Pany 12-35. The IS in 24-70 FF equiv lens is amazing for run and gun and will be my next lens purchase.

Since the Olympus has IS built into the camera the Zuiko lenses dont need it. They are better performing lenses than the Panasonic in general but I haven't bought any because they are expensive and heavy and like you I like my GH3 so I bought Lumix lenses.

Funnily, I don't find the IS in the 12-35 2.8 all that great compared to the Canon 17-55 2.8 I had for the 7D.

...It might be better with this new OM-D EM-1 camera. Given it's been more than a year since the introduction of the OM-D EM-5, I'm hoping that Olympus is taking video a lot more seriously.

It is somewhat improved, but as I said, not up to the GHx series standard. And I am talking about the EM-1.

So you've actually used this new camera ?

...There are no professional reviews published to web at this point in time, so everything is speculation at this point unless you have access to one of the prototype cameras.

Nobody has seen/tested/used the camera so far, no full specs have been published - basically it's all a bit of a mystery. Saying that video 'is somewhat improved but not up to the GHx series standard' makes no sense (unless you work for Olympus or are a tester).
I've read somewhere that Olympus listened to to the video crowd this time, so hopefully the codec will be somewhat decent, maybe even high bit rate intra, who knows :)

For someone who has the GH3, why would you want this lens? There's the extra 5mm on the long side, but it's not stabilized, so overall, how is it better than the panny 12-35? It's cheaper, that's about all. If money were no object, I'd love the 14-35 instead.

Options and competition are always good. If this new EM-1 camera tests well, I might end up buying one for still photo work. ( I am hoping that the video is improved enough to be usable for commercial work )

I want this camera to be great because I like MFT format and to be honest I'm more interested in how good it is as a stills camera. The GH3 is pretty great for video. The MFT format needs to be proven as a pro level stills camera.

I saw somewhere the price estimate around 700$, which is about 1/3 cheaper than 12-35. For me it's big enough difference to consider it. If the lens happened to be parfocal, that would be awesome. It is a pity Panasonic does not give us something like 18-105/4 Power Zoom, like the one Sony just introduced.

If Panasonic came out with a fast parfocal video orientated zoom lens for MFT I think they would sell a boat load of them even at a premium.
