Olympus EM-5 MK II -- for video

The Olympus 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS) is mouth-watering. Now that they seem to be paying a bit more attention to video, I hope that they will include decent audio features on the next-generation EM-1 (mic and headphone jacks, level controls, good quality circuitry).

I just found this post here, I guess I had poor search terms
and it seems there is nowhere else to write it

could it be a case of: 'if a tree falls in the forest...'

I really hope Panasonic considers adding the 5 axis stabilization to the GH5. Considering how many people use adapted lenses, cine lenses, Olympus lenses or even many of the Panasonic primes without stabilization I think this would be a huge feature worthy of many to upgrade for.

they wont
their investment is with stabilised lenses

not only that
Olympus's contractual aliance probably means theyre now closer to Panasonic competitor SONY that they ever where with Panny

That doesn't change the fact that a few newer cameras are starting to add 5 axis stabilization or some form of in body stabilizations. Sure Panasonic is invested in stabilized lenses but that was because at the time it was the best option. Panasonic also knows how well their camera does with the film community who use non Panasonic lenses. While Panasonic wants to sell lenses of course they also want to sell bodies and this is one way to keep the GH line viable in the future. Right now it has an edge but once the competition manages in camera 4k compression Panasonic will have to step up their game a bit.

If Panasonic did this then I'd buy two GH5 right away. However, it's my understanding that it's not possible due to heat issues. A Panasonic rep mentioned it briefly in a B&H Photo "Get to Know the GH4" webcast. The 5-axis stabilization requires the imaging sensor to be free-floating to some degree which prevents it from off-loading its heat into a heat sink. The GH4's sensor would get too hot if it weren't attached to its heat sink. But we can all dream can't we?

Look that just dreamworld stuff
Traditionally Panasonic has always gone with its system it calls OIS, even for fixed sensor P&S like FZ
That SONY suddenly have IS is no accident, it comes directly from Olympus in their tech swap relationship which is the origin of the EM5 line sensor.
Despite both being mFT Panasonic and Olympus know surprisingly little about what each other are doing

People seem to want cameras to be 'all things', but really manufacturers dont operate that way
just expect OIS to continue under Panasonic, there is nothing wrong with that, thats the safest bet

My understanding from some stuff I've read is that the Sony IBIS is not the same technology as Olympus IBIS. They developed their own with their own patents, and apparently it's not as good as Olympus'. This brings up another thought - Olympus' IBIS is the best in the business and as such provides a unique competitive advantage, so they are not likely to license it to any of their competitors.

Panasonic, on the other hand, has a hybrid 5-axis IS in their camcorders that apparently also works fairly well. I wonder if they would consider introducing that to their photo cameras or if the two setups are too different for it to work well.

Panasonic also has IBIS in some still cameras - f.ex. GX7 - but only while in still photo mode (not video). I feel that given that they have IBIS in their video cams, and also in their still cams (photo mode), it's not a big step to also extend this to the video mode in their GH line. But I agree that would be a big departure, and I'm not sure Panasonic would do it, even though I really think they should.

Just read the review...

Looks very interesting, will be very interested seeing some side by sides with the GH4, as the IBIS looks amazing.

Interesting to read you can't adjust exposure once you click record and you can't co-record if you have the HDMI enabled and 4:2:2 selected...

These was on the pre 1.0 firmware mind - Maybe these will get fixed on release / are fixed ?

I think he mentions using Auto ISO,

"It does have a nifty Auto ISO feature and for a few shots in the clip I put the camera into shutter priority (movie mode) and locked the shutter and let the camera ride the exposure. In shutter priority mode (Movie) i kept the same shutter speed and it used both Iris and ISO to ride the exposure so I managed a kind of way to change it seamlessly on the fly, but it’s far from ideal."

Wow. That's quite a difference in IS!
That's for sure. The Olympus IBIS is unbelievably good from what I've seen in all the online clips so far, but this comparison shows that it's really something else. Those tests make it seem like their IBIS goes a long way toward reducing the need for external stabilization devices like steadicams. The fact that it works for pretty much any lens, including vintage manual lenses, makes it that much sweeter.

I may have to reconsider my vow to never buy a camera without a headphone jack again, or just pray that they include one (and maybe 4k too) on the EM1 replacement.
