Digital Cinema Standard 4K videos

The OM-D E-M1 Mark II will support Digital Cinema Standard 4K (4096 x 2060 pixels) video capture[SUP]*9[/SUP] at a 24P frame rate and a bit rate of up to 237 Mbps for authentic movie production. The 20.4 megapixel Live MOS sensor will provide a read speed three times faster than that of the predecessor model for effective suppression of movement distortion, resulting in sharp, clear image quality. The video-specific picture mode "Flat" will be ideal for color grading and finishing the footage exactly as envisioned by the videographer.

5-Axis Image Stabilization combined with electronic stabilization for video

With four times the resolution of Full HD, 4K videos are easily affected by camera movement and typically require a tripod, mini jib, crane, and other specialized accessories for movie recording. The OM-D E-M1 Mark II will pair its advanced 5-Axis Image Stabilization with electronic stabilization specialized for movies (M-IS)[SUP]*10[/SUP] to effectively reduce camera shake, making handheld 4K video capture possible. This outstanding image stabilization system will allow videographers to easily shoot movies with virtually no visible camera shake. The camera’s rear vari-angle LCD monitor will be adjustable to the user’s preferred angle for shooting convenience.

HDMI monitor connection and recording synchronization

The HDMI monitor connection will provide the ability to view live video output live on a larger display while shooting. Users will be able to select from Monitor Mode for an external monitor and Recording Mode to capture uncompressed video directly from the HDMI port. The OM-D E-M1 Mark II will be equipped with a synchronization signal so that video recording to an external device may be started or stopped from the camera. A 4:2:2 external output will be provided to meet a wider color correction range. An audio synchronization function will make it easy to synchronize audio recording when using Olympus’ Linear PCM Recorder LS-100 while recording video, and a Slate Tone function will facilitate the syncing of recorded audio and video.

The 60 fps, full resolution RAW burst mode is certainly interesting. I wonder how many seconds/frames you can shoot for in that mode (currently listed as TBD in the specs on the Olympus website). It's nice to see a higher bitrate (> 100 Mbps) for 4K video capture as well.

You really get a sense for what kind of shooters Olympus and Panasonic are targeting if you look at the OM-D E-M1 MKII and GH5 press releases though. Olympus has all kinds of information about number of autofocus points, burst modes, EVF, shutter release lag time, focus stacking, etc. And Panasonic says we can do 4K 60p and 10-bit 4:2:2 internally, what more do you need to know?

To be fair the E-M1 MKII info made available was a lot more detailed overall, and it seems like the camera is a lot closer to being ready for release than the GH5. But in any case, both cameras seem like nice steps forward for Micro 4/3 shooters (whether still or video).

Pentax K1 has the pixel shifting technology as well. It's great for landscaping and the interiors. Not so good for portraits, especially hand held.

When EM-5 came out, Olympuswas promising to put in a more powerful processor in its next iteration, so the hand held hi-res shots became possible. But, when asked about the OMD1 MKII hi-res mode, they were noncommittal. Maybe it'll happen in the iteration after this one.

This camera is starting to look pretty interesting for video. 237Mbps H.264 DCI 4k, headphone jack (finally!), and that new 12-100 f/4 lens with OIS, where they are claiming 6.5 stops(!) of stills stabilization when combined with this camera's IBIS. Unfortunately, the dreaded 30 minute recording limit is still there. They could have the best documentary production large(ish) sensor camera under $5k on their hands, but are already cutting it off at the ankles for this use in comparison to the GH4.

I don't understand why more camera companies don't follow the GH4 model with regard to the 30 minute record limit. Enable unlimited recording for cameras sold outside of the EU, have a 30 minute limit in the basic (photo) model in the EU cameras, and then release a special video model (e.g. GH4R) that has the record limit disabled for those that need it and are willing to pay a bit more for the EU duty. Seems like a lot of the camera packaging, manuals, and even the some part of the firmware settings (initial language, NTSC/PAL recording, etc.) is already different between these different regions, so how hard is it for them to allow for different region-specific record limits as well.

The 30 minute record limit on the Sony a7S and a7S II were particularly inexplicable. I mean those are the video oriented models in the lineup and are already priced at a bit of a premium over the basic a7 and a7 II cameras, so why keep the record limit there?

Unless ... the EU 30 minute record limit law is really just an excuse camera companies are using to hide the overheating and thermal management problems their cameras have with extended record times. That certainly seems possible with Sony anyway.

When D5 was released with that ridiculous, king of self-crippling, three minute clip limit, people complained and complained loudly. So, Nikon listened. Now, it can shoot for thirty minutes ... using ten three minute files.

Of course, many expected that to be hacked quickly anyway.

Hopefully, he can chime in when EM-1 MKII is released.

some of the specs are pretty interesting.

folks talk about the difference in pannie vs oly "look".

i have thought the pannie colors have a bit more pop while the oly is more nuanced.

between pannie and oly, thoughts on who has the more natural skintone?

(i have my own skintone thoughts on canon vs sony!)

thanks in advance.

be well.

Yes, and yes. Oly and Canon. So, what? Will this avoid me Panny and Sony? C'mon, a camera is not only skin tones straight out the box... There's camera beyond that.

I hope so too, or even sooner. I recall him posting here before too.

Any news on what the MSRP will be for this beauty?
"Slightly more than MK1", according to the Olympus management. A popular guess is $1,600.

Yayy! 100% outdoor shots..again... It's cam tease SOP.
That Rohnfelnder photog is a rather well known volcano/geyser shooter. It's pretty hard to stage those indoors.

But I am sure more videos are on their way.

This tells us nothing about photographing people, which is of primary importance to many of us. Nature stuff looks nice though but I want to see some people shots, interviews, etc.
