Hello,
I have 36 hours of HDV 1080p30 (29.97) footage that was shot in 2007. The actual resolution is 1440x1080. I now plan on using this footage, I'd love to conform it to 24p in an attempt to have less of the video look.
I'm using FCPx and the project is set to 1080p HD / 1440x1080 rez / 29.97p Rate.
Any suggestions?
I'm not sure if it's as easy as changing the rate to 24.
thanks!

My suggestion is do not do it!

Now if it is interlaced, i.e. 60i, then you could deinterlace it to 60p and then apply optical flow and slight motion blur to go from 60p to 24p.
But going from 30p to 24p using optical flow is not going to look good.

It's 1440x1080 HDV 29.97p

Sorry, I just don't know if it's interlaced or not. I presumed the p means it's progressive.

I know it's may not be ideal, but I have a limited amount of footage from Pakistan that I need to waive into another project. Given the nature of the project, I truly need it to appear like (30p) video-like.

Question: If I take one of these HDV 29.97 clips and drop it into an HDV timeline (FCPx) set to 24p what exactly happens? It SEEMS to be doing the trick (without any discernible artifacting?)

The p stands for progressive. Download a free program called Mediainfo to check if your video is indeed progressive.
1440x1080 HDV would likely be interlaced but it could be progressive.

I suppose it depends on what your standards are.

There may be situations when you have no alternatives but if you want to go from 30p to 24p just to have a "film look" I gave you the advice not to do that.
Of course, you are free to simply ignore that and do whatever you like. :)

But I would wonder why are you asking in the first place.
