Old Cine Lens

Now before some people jump all over me for questioning Red don't misunderstand. I hope to hell they put out a world class lens system because if they test well at $9,500 for a zoom I will be buying one as soon as I can. I just know how much expertise goes in to creating a lens and It has been mentioned many times by the Red staff how hard an undertaking of the camera alone has been so far. So If they create some of the highest quality glass out there along with the camera, that would be incredible.
.

Finner,

I think the lens will be good value. Building several hundred lenses at one time will allow Red to make the lens far cheaper than a company like Cooke.

Omar,

Look for a Cooke 20-100 lens. Good enough for Stanley K, need I say more.

Stephen

The Cooke 20-100mm zoom was also used by Steven Spielberg as the primary lens in shooting the Emmy-winning HBO mini-series "Band of Brothers". The 20-100 was the direct predecessor of the excellent Cooke 18-100mm zoom.

"A lens is a very complex thing, there are a tremendous amount of variables that go into producing a near image perfect piece of glass."

there are only a few company's making glass for lens ...

many lens company's buy their glass on the open market and many times the glasss inside is made by different company's ... so 1st and last piece is made by company R , 2nd & 3 made by company Y and other pieces by company Z ..

panavision is conisdered a lens at the top ... i always thought panavision made their glass/polished ... however if you read their SEC filings it clearly states that the glass is made/polished by another company, they are depended on that company for their glass and if that company goes out of business they are up a creek ...

Hi,

Panavision makes some fine lenses (Leica glass I understand), but Zeiss & Cooke lenses are just as good. At this level it's down to ones taste.

Hi Gibby,

The Cooke 20-100 changed the way people perceved zooms. A 35 year old lens design but still very good today.

Seeing as how he is my film hero (along with him being many other peoples hero as well) I'm sure that the Cooke 20-100 will be more than adaquate for me. It's funny because I recently did a search on google to see if there was any info on the lenses that he had used and all i found was info on those Ziess lenses used for the candle light scenes in Barry Lyndon. Glad to know that he used the 20-100.

On another note I just wanted to echo Emanuel's sentiments and thank you Stephen and Gibby (and the other professionals who post here) for being generous with the information towards upstarts such as myself. I feel really lucky that people with your experience and body of work are as giving as you are. Thats why I love reading this board daily.

thanks,
Omar

Thanks for the kind words Omar. When I have time, I'm always glad to help. Others have helped me throughout my career, and I'm returning those favors as much as possible.

Hi Omar,

Stanley K used the then new Zeiss Super-Speeds & the Cooke Zoom on 'The Shining' I can see the subtle differences between shots, I also own Super-Speeds. On 'Eyes Wide Shut' he used the Zeiss variable primes and the Cooke 20-100 zoom.

Always glad to help.

From what I understand Panavision Primo glass is made by a company under contract in a far off corner of the world, it's not Leica.

The other spherical lens sets they manufacture are another story entirely, but again- not Leica based.

If someone really wants to put the different optics to the test, it's possible to measure MTF and color uniformity among all the lenses.

All of these manufacturers make glass that perform well, but it's wrong to say that they all perform equally well.

Hi,

MTF & color uniformity are one thing, how the image looks is another.

Geoff Boyle posted some tests a couple of years ago on CML, (link is broken) the lenses DP's rated by looking at the pictures. Zeiss SuperSpeeds came out higher than Zeiss UltraPrimes. The winner was Cooke S4's.

Indeed. I don't recall if Panavision was included in that test. If memory serves they were not. The Cooke S4 primes are great lenses. We have several sets here in the office.

i was going to look up who makes panavision lens by looking in their public SEC filings BUT Panavision is now a private company and all SEC filings are no longer available from my seaches ...

Illya,

You are correct PV lenses were not tested. Geoff used his PL mounted Olympus pen half frame camera for the tests.

Best wishes,

Stephen
