Oktava MK012A

for indoors that ball gag is over kill. Save your $200 (after you'd get the fur for it as well)
and get a good foam one.

This is my favorite vendor for foam gags, and now they are doing "dead cat" fur windscreens as well as other mic accessories. Olsen Audio makers of "WindTech" products. They have the largest selection of anyone I know, very good prices, and made in USA. Can't hardly ask for any better than that. I have no connection with this vendor.

Note that the windtech windscreens that fit the schoeps cmc series
are very very small.
I own a few of them but are almost worthless for anything but a stationary mic placement indoors. (or very slight movement)

Not sure if the oktava are the same size but wanted to mention that.

Hey guys, I know a few of you like the Oktava MK012A, so this Christmas with my Christmas cash I will probably get one, here is the setup I am considering getting:

Mic:

Ball Gag:

Anything else you guys think I would need to get this on my boompole?

I already own the Rode NTG-2 for outdoor shooting so I figured I would get this for indoors.

Funny, you post this thread today. I spent the day listening to Oktava MK012A samples, and it seems like a really excellent value sounding pretty close to mics costing hundreds more. I think I just might pick up one myself.

Just so you you know, Octava sell the Oktava MK012 in a movie set kit which includes a wind screen and a bass roll off capsule instead of the -10 capsule.

Hi Guys! I passed by just to say that I own a MK012 and it´s a real deal.. just one warning.. it´s a very susceptible mic, so.. also bear in mind a good shockmount.

@Rippie- You said the ball gag is overkill, but I've read that Oktavas are so sensitive to wind and mic movement that you really need overkill unless you have a very experienced boom mic.

Are you saying a really good foam windscreen would work both indoors and outdoors with the Oktava?

MeAgain,
No for outdoors you would definitely need something more than a foam windscreen.
The original poster mentioned that he was planning on using the mic indoors.

Oktavas:
1. Only the small diaphragm ones sound good, although the ribbons are decent (but heavy) 2. Many of the ones on the market are fakes. 3. There are some reputable dealers. 3. They make a video model that has a low cut filter. 4. They sound better after the "Dorsey" mod. 5. Some dealers will sell you the mic with the mod at a reasonable price. 6. The best capsule is the omni, followed by the cardioid and the hyper, since the capsules are cheap get all three for at least one of the mics. 7. Contrary to popular belief they do not sound as good as the high end mics, but they sound pretty good. 8. The Elation mics from Russia sound better and are built better if you can get them, they are tough to find.

So which websites sell the genuine ones?

The SoundRoom (www.oktava.com) sell the genuine Russian product (vs. the visually similar but inferior Chinese rip-offs). Furthermore, they provide extra testing and Quality Control to ensure that you get what you are paying for. I don't know about any of the other places that claim to be selling "Oktava"? I wouldn't risk it, personally, to buy anywhere else.

Alas, QC in Russia apparently still isn't up to western standards. The Chinese clones are reportedly better built and more consistent, particularly the amplifier part. But the mic capsules are said to be consistently inferior to the original Russian product. At least this is the report from people who have compared them side-by-side. And, of course, it is ultimately the quality of the capsule that determines how the mic sounds and how it performs.
