Anyway I have been downloading my t3i footage into Vegas Pro and the footage just jumps around stops and goes - looking like crap, so tonight I thought I would just for the heck of it try my old powerbook G4 Mac with imovie 6. I took the same footage and it played nicely in imovie so what is up with that???? I figure the Vegas being a top notch editing system would beat the crap out of an old imovie 6 but I was wrong!

Are you referring to the preview window when you play your clips on the timeline?

Have you rendered the footage to see if it comes out smooth?

My computer is slow and will sometimes jump in the preview window if I'm doing other CPU intensive things at the same time. I'm using vegas pro 10.

Are you sure your Mac isn't transcoding footage somewhere first?
I'd be extremely surprised if your G4 plays your native t3i files smoothly. Processors of that generation could handle only light HD video, and even the core2duos that replaced them would often choke on the CPU-intensive h.264 format at 1080p.

In other words, I didn't get smooth playback of Canon footage in an NLE until I jumped to core i5 and i7 processors. There's no way a G4 could handle it smoothly, unless it is transcoding first in the background. Which, you could do on your PC for vegas as well. Until I upgraded my desktop, I used to transcode everything to either cineform (using neoscene) or DNxHD (using the excellent and free 5DtoRGB), and it would play beautifully in the Vegas timeline.
