OK, so Scarlet is actually S35. This is big.

OK, now tell me why I should keep my AF100 which doesn't even really get me full 1080 res. Buh Bye Panny.

AF100 + Couple SD Cards $4800 with kit lens?

It's a bit of a different beast when it comes down to it. Right tool for the right job quite honestly.

With that said Sub $5,000 is a price point some can deal with better than a price point over $14,000.

Well if you've been using your AF100 to make money and compete with others in this field who are good at their craft, you're probably going to be able to afford Scarlet or be strongly considering the implications. What it brings is game changing at that price point. If you're a hobbyist or dabbling, I agree that Scarlet is probably not what you're looking for.

The rest of my support equipment, monitors, matte box, Nanoflash, and the list goes on, far exceed the af100 at this point in terms of investment.

game changing

Hey is it also a [insert word] killer?

Time to take a break from camera forums till the madness calms down! The Scarlet looks great don't get me wrong but some people without even seeing one, or any footage or anything think it is a 5D,AF,FS,F3 etc killer.

Once the camera is out and in circulation with proven reliability. Then we can all go mad for it.

It's a profession. Not a hobby, just like it is for many others that will not buy a Scarlet. And it's not because 'we aren't making money'. We are. It comes down to other factors most of it being that this camera will not give us clients. Just really not how it works...I choose to have my work and ideas speak for themselves a bit more than picture quality. I went with the AF100 for it's feature list not picture quality. If ultimately I wanted picture quality in the same price range I would have opted for the FS100. It's got a cleaner and nicer image in my opinion. However feature wise it's quite lack luster. Day to day I love the AF100 because of what it has. I let the stories and composition bring the idea home and ultimately the end product isn't worse because of it. Really I feel it might be better.

And as such for my work the scarlet is not needed. It's wanted, however I will not go looking to get one. It's got a price tag that could ultimately be justified but why when my AF100 is doing just as good for me and my current market.

If its for you then go get one? Why post such a thread that really doesn't request well thought out conversation and discussion.

2 camera Red Raw same day edit plus album quality still extractions, weddings for $800. Sadly this is where the 'industry' is headed.

There is only so much billable revenue to go around.

The flip side is we can finally make no budget films at 4k cinema quality. Crap slasher films are going to look soooo good.

The news today was interesting and for me the Red Scarlet was the most impressive, but in no way did this kill off the AF-100. For $5K you can get the AF-100. Still the best bang for your buck. The new Canon cam is HD. Red is 4K. I would like to have the option of reframing in post but thats about it for 4K for me. If you're a feature film shooter then maybe you need more resolution but seriously do you? I live in the broadcast world and they wont be in 4K for a very long time. HD practically killed local broadcasting. 4K will.
Lens choices are the key now. If you're a professional and I mean one that makes money with cameras then investing in lenses that you can take to other cameras is a better place to spend your money. I would rather rent the camera. So don't freak out your AF-100 will work great tomorrow morning. However I wont because I drank to much Jack Daniels tonight :)

Cheers!

I'm waiting. I have a son due in 30 days, and to think about going through all the mess of selling everything, taking photos, trying to make sure I package it right, worrying about what to sell and what to keep, etc. Nah. I have taxes to save for and other things as well. Even if I had the money, I don't know if I would jump on it just yet. I really would love to tear one open and go have some fun, but I'm not in a position to put it to good use at the moment.

Now, if my second feature gets off the ground next fall, then you can count on me probably getting one sometime in the summer and maybe selling some stuff then, but the AF100 might actually stay in my arsenal. Good camera for all sorts of things that I might not want a Scarlet for. Even a BTS cam that wouldn't give me some of the headaches of a DSLR.

Even if I had one tomorrow, in my market 4k is practically pointless. It's the RAW I would be after and I would likely master in 2k anyways just like almost everyone else does. Having it there if you need it is fine, but I wouldn't put it to much use. :)

Good day today. I was clapping and moving and groovin on the couch with my laptop at all the wonderful news. Canons blunder, then RED, then Canons rabbit out of a hat with that 4k DSLR in "development." It's a great time to be in the film biz.

I love my AF-100 but RED is gonna kill it. Even using the scarlet to shoot at 1080p with 3:1 or 4:1 compression at 4:2:2 color, the footage will look fantastic next to the AF-100. The DR in the Scarlet is supposively the same as Epic and that right there sold me. The ONLY drawbacks are the expensive SSD cards and the batteries only last like 40mins and cost $195.

According to a friend of mine, The Social Network was shot using 7.5:1 Compression, so you can be sure that the 3:1 or 4:1 as you stated above could hold up well ;)

I don't know why people are saying a $14k camera is going to kill a $4k one. They're different cameras for different markets and budget levels.

Ummm... did I miss something? Since when did the AF100 not shoot full 1080 resolution?

As to why you should keep it, that's only a decision you can make. As to why *I'm* keeping mine, because 1) I just bought, I don't need to be buying another camera yet :) 2) Forking out $15,000+ to get Scarlet fully up and running just to shoot corporate web videos seems like a bit of overkill. 3) 4k and Red Raw for corporate web videos is a bit of overkill 4) The AF100 will do 80% of what Scarlett will do, and that other 20% just isn't that important to me.

It's two different markets. Scarlet, at $10k for just a brain, is in the same market as the F3 and C300. If you are seriously considering getting a Scarlett, and willing to fork out that much extra cash to get it up and running and actually functional... what were you doing with an AF100 in the first place? Sounds like a Sony F3 with S-Log was more in line with what you would should have bought.

The AF100 only actually resolves around 800 lines (or was it a little less), as revealed by shooting a resolution chart.

The scarlet will not compete against the AF100, but the F3 with s-log.

One thing we should agree to is that Jim was not kidding when he said they changed everything we knew about scarlet.
Actually, this is more a kind of epic-S rather than the 2/3 scarlet capable of 120 fps at 3K that we used to know....

Some of us refuse to shoot on Sony :-)

OK. If you don't own a single RED item, this camera will cost you $26,000 kitted out ($24,100 w/o the PL mount) as RED suggests for "required and recommend" items as stated on the RED store Scarlet page. Thats with a single RED 256gb Red Store. That's to have ONE of everything listed in red type for the Scarlet X/ with AL Canon mount. ONE, no backups. THEN, what will you edit with? To get the most out of RED's 4K raw footage, your kinda forced to by the REDrocket. Now you're at $31,350. NOTE**** This is A la Carte with the first package.

But this is you're first RED buy, right? So let's cut costs on the investment as I would try using the red store. You are going to select the "Scarlet X- AL Canon mount PACKAGE" option (the forth one for $14,015). So lets drop the Bomb EVF first. We will use possibly what we already have out the HDMI. Let's drop the REDmote as well, kinda stupid but we're cutting costs and going basic with EOS lens only. NO PL mount! But we're gonna keep the 256gb REDmag, giving us a total of 320gb total media with the included 64gb in the "package". I think that will do it? We're ready to go! A bare bones EOS mount Scarlet with backups for batteries (2) and 2 hard drives (256 and 64). WIth the extended 2 year warranty. Ready? Well, from my 5 heavy beers deep calculations we're talking $18,250. Bare bones, and before being able to edit the footage comfortably, no Redrocket card. Add just that and you are at $21,450. For a Scarlet that takes Canon glass, only...(Cool on the auto focus though!!!)

OK, cool. We're now ready to edit 4K footage though Canon EOS glass with RAW codec. Are you gonna plop your cash down for what you think is a 4k raw EOS camera? Now you have it. But, you're gonna get sucked in to buying more support gear for it as you just invested in RED. Don;t forget to add the cost of a 4K viewing system (the monitor). What will that run you? But more importantly, where is most the footage going? Oh yeah, to 1080p. OK, we have 4k to play with cropping and scaling for 1080p. Or as I will call, the lazy eyed DOP. $21,450....

It's like a shiny mirror, this 4k. What I'm saying is go into any retail store and look at television sets. Any 4k set in there? Is there anywhere you can connect a 4k set and get a full res signal? The AMC channel JUST added an HD channel to direct TV. Do you have a 4k monitor for your edit suite? In fact, go look up what JUST THAT investment will set you back!

You're OUT OF YOUR MIND if you invest in this camera thinking this is your answer to even the Sony F3. Unless!.....

This camera is a B cam for people working and invested in RED Epic, or plan on going there. No filming the day at the beach with your dog or your wife.
If you're sitting there calculating the figures of selling your AF100 to go Scarlet, just stop now. Grab your camera and go shoot something. Wanna shoot Scarlet? Rent it. To play with this camera properly and taking advantage of 4k, you're talking serious bucks! Like $100,000 to look at images full res shot though EOS glass? Ok....

Final note: the Canon C300 is for "broadcast" Hollywood productions. Broadcast as in what you have in your living room and on your desk, 1080p. I think the camera looks awesome ergonomically, and from just the Laforet short the images look outstanding! THat camera body (or as RED would say, Brain) is TINY!!! The Canon cinema lenses look great! But, it's for Hollywood broadcast series, and we'll see it in feature films.

Sit it out guys. The one's with the AF100, FS100, F3's. These are not the droids you were looking for....
