C300: Offloading issue with C300 footage onto Windows 10 laptop and hard drive

I have just come back from a shoot where I encountered an ususal and frankly disturbing issue when transferring footage from my camera card to a laptop with a newly installed Windows 10 OS.

I plugged in a Mac formatted drive (client supplied) into my Sony Vaio laptop using Mac Drive so it was easily recognised. When I started transferring by copying and pasting the transfer just stopped dead, so I cancelled the copy and restarted.

Upon the completion of the copy I went and did a file size comparison and found to my horror that only 24 GB of the 27.2 was copied. The rest had dissappeared from the camera card! WTF??

So I backed up the now corrupted camera card in the Nexto and started looking in the computers recycle bin where I did indeed find two smaller deleted files that were the beginning of my interview footage. So, I have now managed to extract all the mxf files from all the broken files to "reconstruct" the interview footage. A nightmare to do on location in the middle of the night, but at least I now don't have to tell the producer that there was a total cock-up and it needs to be re-shot.

I am amazed that a simple copy and paste scenario that I have done hundreds of times without issue turned to crap so easily. Is it Windows 10 writing to a Mac formatted drive? Dunno, but I would love to know.

I edit on a Windows laptop but haven't upgraded to Windows 10. I'm still on Windows 7. I don't know the answer to your question.

I typically use dual-record to avoid situations where the card has a problem resulting in the loss or corruption of data.

I have just now reverted to Windows 7. I don't believe it is a corrupt camera card, because the footage was all there initially, I think its more of a copy and paste problem with the data.

I will reformat the card and test again when I am happy that the footage has been ingested into the clients edit suite.

My lesson from this is that I should have backed up first to the Nexto, then done the copy and paste.

... reverted to Windows 7 ... My lesson from this is ...

Back in the day I used Windows Vista.

I copied and pasted a whole bunch of data.

It only copied about half of it correctly.

If an OS can't copy files correctly is it really an OS?

I switched to Mac OSX.

Files transfer.

Life continues.

Peace reigns.

I never went back to Windows.

(sorry, I had to post due to my past experiences, and for a bit of a laugh).

I have just recently considered going to Apple when I buy my next laptop, but I wonder if its really that much better. This is my first such data issue in six years since I went tapeless. Almost always files transfer and life continues.

Windows 10 is copying from all my cameras 100% perfectly. Up to 256GB transfers.

Copy to and from another card to rule it out from being the issue.

There have been reports of Win10 corrupting media files on removable media formatted as FAT32. This is a confirmed bug.

Windows 10 fail? Early adopters never learn...

Yeah yeah, point taken, kind of...

We all trust in technology to a fairly great degree in our industry, and we are generally pretty cautious with our precious footage. Truth is though that there is always some point where we are entering into new ground, for me it was copying and pasting footage using a new OS. Many users here will have copied and pasted using Windows 10 in the field without any issues at all.

There are so many variables with different motherboards, file formats etc, that almost no-one will have exactly my configuration. So there does come a time when you take the plunge and hope that everything will be fine and usually it is. I am surprised though how a simple copy and paste could have turned ugly, hence my post in case it can help someone else avoid this.
