Offload p2 to harddrive?

Can i use my "Lacie mobile drive 80gb usb 2.0" to offload the p2 without an laptop? Cant find it on the net so i cant post an link to it. But the point is that you don't need to conect it to an Ac, just to the usb...

I read in one thread that hvx200 can't give electricty to outher drives? And that you should have an selfpowered harddrive to use (does selfpowered mean by battery or with own ac adapter. If the lacie don't work please post some that do.

My point, does it work good to offload without an laptop? and what kind of drives do you use?

The drive has to have power, as I understand it.

Self powered, but not bus powered. I don't believe it matters if it is DC or AC.

You can only offload from the camera over 1394 to a simple drive. I think where this has become a little confusing is where guys have intelligent USB drives that can call for the files. This is not the same thing. From the camera to a simple drive it must be 1394. And that drive has to supply its own power.

Hope this helps,

Jan

Thanks its helps cause now atleast i know i can't use my lacie, but i suppose my g-raid should work (cause its firewire and have an AC). If not I have to go for a laptop...

Don't use a drive that you plan on using for any other purpose. The HVX formats the drive before it can use it, destroying all data on it. So using a G-Raid would be probably a bad idea; presumably you're using that 320gb or 500gb or whatever-size RAID for all sorts of other purposes, right?

I mean, it will work with a G-Raid, you just wouldn't be able to have anything else on the drive. And it only uses 60gb of storage, after that it can't use any more (if you're using 4GB cards). So it's a much better idea to get a little laptop drive in an external firewire enclosure, one that you can dedicate to the task of offloading, rather than trying to adapt some other drive or something like a G-Raid into serving the offloading purposes.

Yeah it would have been a waste of space. Now i definitely going for an laptop. I probely need one sooner or later any way. Thanks again!

Do any hardrive power themselves by Battery supply instead of AC adapters since the HVX cannot power the drive?

The problem is, though I'm not sure I understand why only usb OTG devices seem to be battery powered. Firewire drives can only be powered with AC adapter or USB from computer to power connector on the FW drive (To provide the 5v needed) I decided to use a 2.5 Firewire enclosure because transfer speeds are way faster than USB. I get 4 minutes or less for 1 4gb card on firewire and I decided besides using the AC adapter, constructing my own battery pack for the drive using one this forum's member instructions, tonight I'll test it to see how it goes.

Why is that

Why is it that the 4gb cards will only use up 60gb of storage on the external drive?

Because you have a limit of 15 partitions on the FAT32 format and the camera creates a new partition not a folder, each time you offload a card on firewire host mode.

Please post your results-
Im keenly interested in constructing my own battery pack for a 2.5 inch FW drive.
I tried to go the Magic Box USB2 OTG route and i was thoroughly dissappointed.
Where in the forum did you find the instructions? I actually tried researching myself but clear cut instructions would be great.
I cant seem to find it with a search.

Hey guys, the battery pack worked, thanks Milezee for the instructions! The pack looks really funny but hey it gets the job done!

Make sure you have a heatsink on the voltage regulator, it can get quite hot after a while as its not a very efficient circuit!

Glad it works for you though ;)

Yowzers!
I was actually looking for something a bit more stylish guys...
Can i not just get a rechargable lithium ion battery pack from somewhere and use that with my 2.5 external firewire drive? and if so what specifications does it need?

--oh wait even better! I need your knowledge to hack a battery charger..
that way we can use our HVX Lithium-ion batterys with the firewire drive.
that would be perfect just mount the top loading battery charger ontop of the firewire drive thats screwmounted on top of the camera- Perfect!

THanks for the help!

I also bought a small 5 volt rechargable lith ion battery pack but it didn't work hense the messey radio shack job. The problem is the spin up for a drive, there is a surge in the power required. The capacitors in my circuit are what allows this. I'm sure someone could come up with a better circuit, I'm no electronics expert, but this circiot is simple and works ok.

Milezee,
Hmmmmm... I see.. the spin up needs a surge of power...
so how do the guys that make the USB OTG drives do it?
I mean they use the same type of harddrive in their enclosures.

And any ideas on how to hack a HVX/DVX battery recharger to be used with a fire wire drive??
