Official shutter/iso tests

The other benefit to the closet light he uses is that it fills the entire lens, so their is no chance of ambient light or other sources affecting exposure.

My advice, just me, is to get a standard regular incandescent light and stay away from the LED...wayyyy too bright. But if you have the 50mhz flicker that bothers you, maybe it's good for you. The led light is too small, so if you don't have it in the exact same spot every time your resluts are going to be different, even the slightest move and your shutter will be off. Also, the 3 way dimmer isn't really a dimmer. It just turns off 1 bulb each click. You may not get the same amount of light, but nothing the camera will notice.

I suggest this and use a cloth to dim it a bit.

I'll probably use a piece of diffusion instead of cloth, that way I can get repeatable results without worrying about always using the same cloth everywhere I go. Maybe 250 or 216.

what i'm trying to point out is that when you have an led, you can't dim them like you can a regular incandescent. maybe you have a different led lying around over in switz, but the ones around here, just don't dim, the just go from bright, to off. they are too direct and too bright.

The diameter of the Dot it is almost exactly the same as my manual nikkors. I'm using a cloth too, otherwise the shutter closes too much.

The thing is, I don't have to get the exact same position all the time, because I can see the shutter adjusting, but I surely could, the thing fit's my lenses as it was made for them. The dimming function is just turning off one of the three leds at a time. Only one option offers the correct amount of light (I think it's the dimmest).

vikings, women, hockey, not cheese, different countries. led's dim just fine with a pwm dimmer, which is why i mention exactly that in every post. :-)

i've never heard you mention a pwm dimmer in your posts. but if you can dim an led light, awesome. i prefer to use less gear when the incandescent light does just fine when I put a cloth over it.

andrew, i posted a demonstration for you showing both steps. i still prefer to lock the AE before entering LV, just gives me a nicer, cleaner look. says 75mins, so check back later.

I use a matte box so the light won't go around the lens, has to be as wide as the box so no other light comes in.

either. seems like you get the same shutter speed with the "before lv + polarizer" as with the "+/- 0 f/4", the difference is just that the former is overexposed. what if you stop that down to the same exposure, don't you get very similar results? i'm still not sure what benefit there is with locking before live view. since i work with 50hz lights i can't really use that method unless i find a light source that gives me 1/50 every time so i'm curious what i'm missing.

actually, i forgot to mention, i didn't open the iris all the way in the test where i use LV to lock my AE vs locking it before LV. Here's a grab with it all the way open after locking my AE in LV at 0

led dimmers are typically built into the light, so that's one thing to carry around total rather than a light and a cloth, which makes two. ;-) i'm not saying that led's are better per se, but i don't think it's fair to dismiss technology just because you don't understand it yourself. i can't perform cardiac surgery, but i sure as hell believe in its merits even though rest and the occasional dose of nitro can work well too. :-)

I'm gonna shoot something, you'll see for yourselves, it's really interesting, and I'm very satisfied with it. I can't probably find the same closet light around here in Brazil, but the cool thing about the dot it, is that it's readily available anywhere. I'll post back the test and visual explanation! :D

that'll be cool taubkin...like i said, it's just not for me. i could use a shirt or something to diffuse it more. i don't need 1/50 of shutter anyway, makes it pointless to use. but heck, now i have it for other things, like putting it under my shirt so i look like iron man and walking the dog.

so when is nikon going to release the D90B lol, with manual shutter and F-stop configuration. That way i could use my nikon lenses.

What's going on nikon?!?!?!

they add that simple feature, and they kill the market.
