Official Rejection

I realize there's a movie out of this title ^^^ However this thread is only slightly related to it.

I just got my first film festival rejection. So far the score is Festivals: 1 Me: 0. The festival received 20 feature length submissions and only accepted 1! Ouch. I've read a lot about the submission process, and I know this is how it goes and is to be expected. It's just a bummer when you work so hard on something and it doesn't quite work out how you hoped (what ever does though?). I'm waiting on a few more fests, and hopefully it will get screened somewhere. In the end it's not a terrible loss. I shot the film (approx 75 min) for only ~$700 and learned a ton along the way. I know in my next movie I'll be able to correct a lot of the mistakes I made on this one, and I'll probably have at least double the budget of this one :)~

Anyone have similar experiences with their first movies? Horror stories? Triumphs? (Please don't bring up Rebel Without a Crew haha)

What I especially hate is one of the festivals that rejected my film has put me on their email list, so I get email from them all the time talking about all the crap they have going on. It's like rubbing salt in the wound

You have much to learn Grasshopper.

Grow with rejection and become stronger.

Seriously, if you get pissed this early in your submission rejections, you're in trouble.

You'll be ready when you can snatch the pebble from my hand... without getting upset if I slap you when you miss.

my first film was accepted to the majority of festivals i submitted and got picked up by a distributor within a few months. now i live in la and get paid 20million dollars per action flick and im dating megan fox.

okay, not really, but this is what we all hope for when starting out. then reality kicks you in the ass and you learn it'll take 15-20 years to acquire enough knowledge to get to that point. :)

...and then you're too old to enjoy it!

Stick your rejection letters on your wall and stack onto it each time. That's what Steven King did, and he's pretty famous now for that Maximum Overdrive movie he did.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I'm really not all that discouraged by the rejection, and I feel that when I deserve recognition, I'll get it. Or maybe not. What's that phrase about inspiration and perspiration?

A rejection letter is an awesome thing. If nothing else it is proof in black and white that you completed a film. That is a heck of a lot more than most "filmmakers" I know can say.

Not necessarily.......

True story. I knew a guy who worked at a trailer company, and Michael Douglas came in one day to do a voice-over. Douglas saw a screen saver on the guy's computer and asked "Who is that!?". The guy said "Catherine Zeta Jones. She was in Zorro." Two weeks later they were dating.
