OFFICIAL A1 Custom Presets thread

i use from FCP export using Quicktime conversion (it s better than Compressor because when Compressor uses some advanced algorithms, it destroys the image)
I set H264, Automatic keyframes, 5000kbps, AAC audio 1280x720

What would be the best preset to use if I wanted to shoot a film that wasn't very stylized, but more of a comedy like Superbad or forgetting Sarah marshall

I almost always shoot in uncontrolled lighting for now so I'm trying to come up with a preset to help in high contrast situations to boost the dynamic range a bit, here's what I've come up with so far, but I'd like to know what other suggestions people have. I'm gonna call it DRBOOST1.
GAM : 1
KNE : L
BLK : S
PED : 1
SHP : 2 (pretty much unrelated to what I'm specifically trying to achieve but I think it looks a little better, set to your liking)
COR : 6 (this is to help reduce noise in the close to black areas that might wind up being underexposed compared to the rest of the image)
Everything else is on zero.
I did some tests and by opening up the iris about half a stop it seems to lower the whites by about 10% in luminance, leave the mids alone for the most part, and raise the blacks by about 2%, but I'd like to see something more significant.

Okay. Does anyone know "the" equation for converting XH A1 presets to XL H1 presets? I really want to keep my footage the same.

So if it's possible, make it so it's categorized.

Example:

CGN: .5 XH A1 +2

or something like that. (not real)

ALSO:

The Prime Eights preset + color grade + vignette + grain - adapter:

Converted to 24p. No adapter was used.

Look good?

Used some Neat Video noise reduction and some Magic Bullet Looks

Wow, that is very, very noisy and the image looks like it's been sharpened significantly in post, especially those odd patterns on her skin.

My Vision X moddified version to max sensivity:
Set AE Shift to -0.75

GAM N
KNE L
BLK P
PED -4
SET -4

SHP 9
HDF L

CMX N
CGN 50
CPH 0
RGN 50
GGN 50
BGN 50

RGM -30
RBM -18
GRM 2
GBM -6
BRM 11
BGM -49

I hope this is not redundant. But,

1. Do you re-adjust white balance when you try each preset? (seems like it makes sense to do this)

2. As far as getting (a list of..) the best presets in one place, I guess it safe to assume this is impossible because they are being tweaked constantly.. and new ones are being created. The last I saw was a zip file on dvinfo which had 40 presets and a spreadsheet with settings. I think the first 8 or so were the factory presets (could be wrong). So, any thoughts on this?

Am I correct to assume that the best way is to bounce between here and dvinfo and just browse through the threads?

Is the dvinfo thread kept up to date? It seems like this is the last thread (somewhat up to date) and then the original thread by Chris Hurd is temporarily locked. http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/canon-xh-series-hdv-camcorders/236185-xh-a1-presets.html

Vision rgbx

Vision rgbx

I COMBINED VISION X AND VIVID RGB. I LIKE VISION X FOR ITS CLARITY AND LOW LIGHT BUT IT LOOKS A LITTLE DULL AND I LIKE VIVID RGB FOR ITS COLORS, BUT IT IS JUST TOO SATURATED, CARTOONY AT TIMES. JUST EXPERIMENTING ON THIS PRESET, LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. I UPLOADED A SAMPLE, SORRY FOR THE SHAKINESS. JUST UPLOADED AND NOT TOTALLY PROCESSED.

Hvx match?

Hvx match?

Is there a preset to match the a1 with the HVX? i've tried searching but cant find anything.

Hey someday I like your vision presets but do you suggest to use the VisionX or do you still use some of the older ones for some special situations?

I'm looking for a preset which can create noiseless and sharp pictures even under a little bit low light conditions (not pure low light but still darker then sunlight :) ) and i wanna use some advanced cc in post.

Do you suggest VisionX for this? I like the results from it but perhaps you have some more presets which you use for youre videos. I wanna collect some presets to test them out.

Doesn't exist. That's the nature of how a camera sensor works. You get noise whenever the light level falls below a certain threshold (the noise floor). If you try to gain up or play around with noise reduction to bring that down, your sharpness suffers. It's simply not possible to extend a camera's low light performance by playing around with the presets; at best you're stretching the blacks level which simply introduces noise there anyway. And of course under those type of conditions any kind of color grading will degrade the image very quickly.

Jesus! this thread is 3 1/2 years old and 40 pages long. Will someone please link me to the latest full chart of presets?

This video was shot two nights ago. I was stunned by the good quality and that almost no grain appeared - so I made some quick editing just to show other people the result.

This was shot with a Canon XH A1 with no extra lenses. Downloaded the preset "Vision7", tweaked it a bit and put the gain to -3 db. The shutter was 1/25.

Quick editing (1h) in Premiere CS4.

Using only the raw filmed material directly, meaning:
- No color grading at all!
- No changes in levels, light, contrast or anything!
- No plugins or effects

Straight from the camera...

Please explain your custom preset and settings. I cannot get footage like this in the dark
