Offical HVX Cases thread/ Hard / Soft/ Small / Large

Anyone tried to fit a Powerbook 17" in a L3 Porta Brace Backpack? Does it work? I preordered the bag, but now i'm starting to get contradicting reports...

sorry to bring this thread back to the surface, but does anyone know if the Kata HB-207 backpack is carry on legal?

PDX, the dimensions say so, and that's what I bought it for, but I haven't had it on a plane yet.

What about a bag that holds two cams as well as some accessories? I do weddings, and earlier this year got amvona's largest bag (http://www.amvona.com/v7/shop/?page=shop/flypage&view=1&product_id=2074). Well, it would have been great for a consumer cam, but the DVX's viewfinder actually makes it too long for this bag. I rented the DVX and was given a Kata bag along with it. Not sure what model it was, but I'm looking at the MCC2 now ... http://www.kata-bags.com/Item.asp?pid=5&cid=5&perentId=1&ProdLine=1.

Just checked the dimensions of this bag vs the cams:
Kata MCC-2: 28.4L x 10.2W x 9.9H
DVC60 16-15/16D x 8-5/16W x 8-7/8H
DVX 14-3/8D x 5.5W x 6-5/16H

THe length works, but they wouldn't both fit--neither both laying on sides and stacked nor side-by-side. Any other suggestions for carrying two cams? Maybe I'll just have to use two bags that each will fit one cam and some accessories, and be able to attach tripod to outside of one of them--rather than lugging tripod around in its bag. Tripod also from amvona by the way (http://www.amvona.com/v7/shop/?page=shop/flypage&view=1&product_id=1952). Will upgrade to Bogen/Manfrotto someday.

I decided that I wouldn't get a soft case here in Dubai. Due to the traffic etc for one, i wanted to make sure the camera would be in a hard foam case because of hard braking, accidents, roadworks. Ive invested in a custom made Flight case, steel shell with ultra tough light weight plastic arround it, not sure what it is but its stronger than the heavier plywood. Double locks, fully foamed inside, with plywood dividers, i have a section for cables, a section for the camera, a slot for an external hard drive, memory cards, batteries. Have made a sectoin for headphones and mic also. Everything will be checked before delivery by me so i know it will work.

Most shooters out here that i have seen with vari cams and such are using flight cases, the security of them compared to a bag is necesary for this cam in my opinion. Im not a big girl and my shoulders cant take these big oversized handbags for long before having to put it down, so ive put weels and a handle to the flight case. Would rather look like an airhostess than the hunchback of dubai.

Il post a pick with my gear inside when i recieve it. Oh and one more thing. Flight cases look realy cool.

I have the Tortlerig X. I got the first one from 16x9. The thing is a god send, especially when doing a program where you are on your feet for hours shooting while waiting for fish to bite.

You may look like a dork, but damn does it do the job! It's identical to the original Tortlerig just made with HVX in mind.

This my first post, have a great day!

Rush,
I have been told that the HVX200 will not fit in the Panda (from a rep at your old stomping ground). Do you have the old Panda (401) or the new Panda (KTVE402)?

And how do you like the bag? Is it designed well? Is it comfortable on your back?

One last question... The specs on the Kata site give 13 X 9.1 X 21.7 " as the dimensions. Are those internal or external?

Thanks bunches,
JEB

Panda-402 from the Kata webiste pdf gives:

External Max. Size:

Length: 15"
Width: 9.1"
Height: 21.7"

Internal Main Compartment:
Length: 15"
Width: 6.3"
Height: 19.7"

so it's the 6.3"/9.1" dimension that's too small for the HVX's 7" min side

Rush PM'ed me about this, he says....

"The HVX does fit in there, so does the Z1U. The Z1 is bigger and it fits. In fact, I have transported two Z1U's in the Panda. :) It is the largest incognito affordable carryon backpack that fits under the seat in front or in the compartment above. I have the 401, the 402 has more protection. But understand that it does NOT have a rigid frame, you have to be careful. I travelled all over Europe with it. Very comfy, I would double pad the top shoulder straps for week-long hikes. It has ab-strap too, and connectors for audio mixer bag. I pad the HVX with more foam support just for safety. If you remove all the internal padding in the bag, it will allow you to carry a full size 17" LCD as well, like Evin's Sony LCD. I just measured the bag for you, those are internal dimensions.
Great bag. "

Rush, hopefully you don't mind me sharing the info with the rest of the forum.

And thanks Jon for your input as well. It looks like maybe the 402, because it has more padding, has smaller internal dimensions. This is just a guess.

Personally I've ordered the Pelican 5010 and I'll be getting a soft bag after NAB. Murphy's law is always knocking and I plan on keeping the door locked! :)

I got the Cinebag Production Bag a while back.

While it is not a carry on bag, it works great for day to day shoots. I took most of the internal pockets out to make room for my camera. Now I can store the HVX with the 4x4 mattebox, follow focus, and wireless mic receiver bracket installed on the camera.

There is ample room for headphones, mic cable, tapes, batteries, charger, light meter, wireless mics, adapters, gray cards, pens, and just about everything else you need for a day in the field. There is even a big slot on the back that holds the French flag for the mattebox. On top of that, the price was reasonable.

No problem Jeb. It's funny I am quoting myself through you from a PM

I just wanted to quote that and make sure something is clear, it won't fit both the cam and the LCD; what I meant by "as well" was that it the bag will also fit an LCD if that is all you want to transport in it. You just remove the center divider and bingo.

this is not completely true. the interior dimensions are also different nl. DVO-1U (17"*8"*8.5") and the DVO-2U (18"*10"*10")

Well the DVO1, which is the front-pocket-less version of the DVO2, is airport-friendly. I use a Kata Panda backpack, and I have a DVO2 for local stuff.

Offical HVX Cases thread/ Hard / Soft/ Small / Large

I'm curious what cases & pouches everyone uses to store their gear.

I picked up a Kata MC-61 case for the HVX200 & MacBookPro, but everything else is loose inside. I'm looking for bags/pouches for my Sennheiser shotgun & wireless mics as well as other various tools, cords and support gear I carry along.

I was using zippered money bags I picked up at Wal-Mart, but they're just a few inches too big. I've got a few zippered mic pouches that came with my AudioControl meters (from back in my car show days) which are perfect, but I use them for other things. I'm thinking of having a friend make more, but I was curious if pouches like this were already being sold.

To all,

I was looking at the Kata TCCT bag:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&Q=&is=REG&O=productlist&sku=196062

It is extremely expensive at $428 but looks as though I could carry the HVX-200 with accessory shotgun microphone in place and plugged in for field work (slung over shoulder) and break it down and pack it to carry on a plane. Anyone with experience with the bag? I searched the archives for Kata TCCT and found just a mention in a string on bags that ended in 2004. Are there other recommendations for bags for run and gun and plane travel? Thanks. David.

perfect run and gun/plane travel bag

perfect run and gun/plane travel bag

I know it's already been mentioned, but I recently purchased the Porta Brace DVO-1U bag. Go to a store where you can compare bags, but for a compact, sturdy bag, that you can use for plane travel, I don't think anything compares. I've used it on four airline trips in the last two weeks. It fits overhead, and the sides and top are rigid to protect the camera. Petrol cases are cheaper but can't compete when you actually handle the two brands together.

At $250 this is a well-built bag that will last for years to come. There's plenty of room for spare batteries, tapes, and portable hard drives. There's even a special pocket for a shotgun mic. Now I just wish someone would make a tripod that weighs under 5lbs and folds up to the size of the camera.
