This is my first post but I've been lurking for a while. I'm looking at getting the HVX200 as soon as it hits Australia, but I'm just aquiring a a few accessories such as a soft case to cradle the camera in for the time being. I'm looking for a case that will house the camera with a Formatt matte box attached to the front element. Any ideas anyone?

Cheers,
Peter

Hi PowerVideo,
As I've said in the other post here about cases, you'd be mad to get a soft case/bag for the hvx - " for the time being..." problem is you'll go out using the bag and the camera will get destroyed, Murphy is lurking out there to get you the very day you let your guard down. Water/moisture proofing is also very important especially during storage inside your home, it can cause fungus in the lens system which you will find impossible to remedy, so keep silica pack always in case too.
That's my tuppence worth

Hmmmm....may need to look at a Pelican. But you know when you are out doing some unplanned shooting and just want to have the camera with you; a soft (padded) case is very handy and probably more practical.

That's exactly when disaster will strike because it is unplanned and you're not giving things as much thought, you'll put the bag down for one second beside you and a car will swerve off the road and run over it - it's Murphy's Law. I drove over my own camera twice, front wheel then back wheel, then wondered what the bump was and looked back to find my mangled soft bag lying in the road.... ooohhh there's other stories too but I can't think about them, way too expensive and stupid to recall

Both might be called for. Both come in handy. Although Pelican is great for knocking people as you stride through the airport and/or bar. Barra should go with something bulletproof.

You ran over a camera? I can understand if you were shooting... but.. Well, must be a good story to it somewhere.

This is it.

I'm sure you could take this on a plane, might not fit under a seat though.

You are buying a $6000 camera, yes it does make $100 difference to go with a name brand, IMHO at least. My Porta Brace bags have been to three countries 15 states and at least 4 deserts and they have all performed flawlessly.

I spent a few hundred on a kata bag/backpack and after 5 months of travelling in the "jungles" of Nicaragua with my gear, I have to say its a pretty kick ass and solid case. Plus its within the limits for carry on luggage on airplanes. Pelican cases are a pain unless you have some sort of abuse you want to dish out to your equipment. My advice, take care of your gear and you'll be fine.

Indosmoke--which Kata bag were you using? I'm looking for a good bag for an HVX.

evinsky--I love the looks of that Porta, have you ever tried to take it on a plane? I'm thinking that would be the ticket as long as I could take it as a carry on.

for mlove, you can check it out on the kata website under rain covers i do believe. That alone is the single most valuable purchase i have made for my camera to date. Worth it in more than a million ways.

Check out the Petrol Website.
There are a few possibilities there as well. They sell them @ B&H , but they don't come up when you ask for camera bags by Petro. But they do show up if you search for the model #. B&H salesman suggested them:
PCCBN2, PDB1N, PWBHDV, PWRHDV

I have this bag but without the slick cover. I don't think it costs much more to get the cover with it but for me it's just something I wouldn't use since access to controls becomes a pain. I moved out of the pelican into this semi hard case and have been happy ever since. You can get a lot into this bag and mine came with two padded pouches that hold my wireless transmitter and receiver along with other sensitive stuff. It also came with a long pouch that holds my shotgun mic. It just really makes all your "stuff" quickly accessable since it's so customizable. Every case decision is pretty personal but I would highly recommend the Porta Brace........worth every penny!
