FS7: Off the top of your head....

2 cards in the camera. one 64 gig, one 128. 128 is always in A slot.

format before shooting and sometimes when I hit record it starts writing to B, Sometimes A...???

I just figured it would always start with A and then rollover to B if the card filled up.

Anyway to make it always start with A? I don't recall ever seeing anything in the menu but I don't have the cams with me right now and curiosity is killing me.

Chances are you formatted the cards in that order leaving the camera set to slot B after formatting card in slot B. Will record from last chosen card slot.

Isn't it just the opposite?

It will start recording on whatever card WAS NOT the last card formatted.

When you format card A, it will make card B the record card. When you format card B, it will make card A the record card.

Card A most often ends up being the first-to-record card because operators most often format card A, then format Card B. If you only format Card A, the camera will default to card B as first-to-record.

I guess I defaulted a bit to my own workflow where I switch and double check card content before formatting so in my case I would have B selected if I last formatted B. But you are right if you have A selected and never select B then it should still be on A if you format in menu.

No, that is incorrect.

If you have slot A selected and format slot A, the record slot becomes slot B. I just performed a test on my camera to confirm this. It always switches the record slot to the slot you are not formatting.

format slot A, slot B becomes the record slot.

format slot B, slot A becomes the record slot.

format slot A, then format slot B, slot A will be the record slot.

That is why, when formatting both cards, I always format slot A first and then slot B so that the result is that slot A is first to record.

Another way to think of it is that formatting a card makes that card 2nd in line to record, when you have 2 cards in the camera. If you only have 1 card in the camera, that 1 card will of course be first up to record after formatting.

Really? My camera is away or I'd test it. Obviously its something that hasn't mattered to me as I've managed just fine over the 2yrs with the wrong thought process.

fyi to all concerned, if you purchase one of the new XQD cards all your old card readers become useless for reading that card. Any backup card readers you have stashed away in your kit become obsolete for reading the newer cards. The result being that you have to make all your backup card readers the new style card reader, at $59 a pop. If you don't and you misplace or lose the one new style card reader, you won't be able to transfer footage from any new-style cards.

New card readers will read old style and new style cards.

Previous card readers will not read new style cards.

You might be thinking two generations of cards back. I just tried using one of the readers that came with the G series cards with a brand new G/E series card with no problems.

That is good news. I should have performed a test before repeating a claim I read on the Sony forum.

Thank you for the correction and for making the many Gen II card readers I have still viable!

I think there must be something wrong with your camera or card then.. if like you say you format A first then B.. the camera should move to A as the live card .. even you switch it off and on again it should go to A.. if its randomly sometimes starting on card/slot B .. and sometimes A .. must be a camera fault I guess.. or one of the cards is dodgy .. and the camera is going to another slot because it has trouble seeing the other card..? .. more likely I guess than camera problem..

When I got my FS7 back in 2014 I tried two different XQD cards S and G. The real difference in how these works with readers. G cards have a a build in controller and S cards don't. Thus one can't use S cards in a G card reader, but G cards can be read in S card readers with slower speed. I believe M cards to be just like G cards in having a built in controller.
