Off Brand Batteries

Looking at the off brand batteries on ebay. I believe I need the LPE6. The Canon brand is about $80 and the offbrand is about $20... Any reviews on these off brands? If I am correct, I believe the only thing you lose is the ability to see battery life because the off brand can't communicate with the camera properly for that? Is that correct? Anything else I would be giving up going with the off brand?

that is the exact buyer i just bought from with that exact auction listing... thanks once again for the help bro...
i hope i don't have the bad luck as the member above this post... fingers crossed!

Dude, I would strongly urge you to consider this option: http://cgi.ebay.com/2x-LP-E6-LPE6-B...igital_Camera_Accessories?hash=item20ae2bafee

It seems like a much better value to me. At less than $17 shipped per package, you can get eight batteries and four chargers for the price of a single genuine LP-E6 from B&H or Adorama.

buy branded. I've used off brands in all my cameras over the years until now with my 7D - failures, short life, crappy build quality - you name it. After wrapping a feature shot with 4 HV20/30's where we fought over the genuine Canon's for more runtime, I'm done with cheap OEMs. That even goes for the old DVXuser DVX batts - though Jared replaced two dead ones, never got runtime or life that Panny's did.

Just say no (at least until someone actually makes an generic batt that is built as well, lasts as long and give the same runtime).

I think a case can be made either way for or against off-brand batteries. If reliability and performance are paramount, stick with the more expensive batteries recommended by the manufacturer. I have had a Canon HV20 HDV camera since 2007. I bought two off-brand batteries with charger on ebay for it and I have not had a problem with them. But I must point out that I have not used my HV20 that frequently and have not used it for critical work, such as weddings. If I did, I would have stuck with the more expensive batteries. But, as it turned out, now that I am looking to step up from the HV20, it was just as well that I saved some money and got the off-brand batteries, because I would end up having to buy all new batteries with a new camera anyway.

I should mention that, about 15 years ago, when I was shooting weddings on my Sony V5000 Hi8 camcorder, I did use some off-brand batteries. Back in those days, the camcorders were less energy efficient than they are today and they used Nickel Cadmium batteries, which were inferior to today's batteries. The most I could hope for was one hour of use on a battery. I only used the genuine Sony batteries for the wedding ceremony, which required uninterrupted and dependable power. There are no retakes in that situation, thus I would never take the chance on those important scenes with an off-brand battery. I only used the off-brand Ni-Cad batteries for the less-critical scenes, so I can save the power on the Sony batteries for the other important scenes. However, they were useful in supplementing the genuine batteries to get me through a full day of shooting.
