Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

Haha, this is great. Mitch can't/won't make any new promises so he's just taken to teasing us instead. Love it.

Keep the good news flowing - can't wait for what's next.

So I will probably make a new topic soon, but I shot for a week in Dominica with the FS700 and 7Q. Landscape, wildlife, people, lots of activity. We shot the whole gamut, 4K RAW at 24 and 60, 2K at 240fps, and 4KtoHD. I should hopefully have some incredible footage to share soon, we are cutting it into a short promotional video for the island.

One thing I do have to say is that the 7Q and this firmware update has given me a whole new camera. The director and I have been blown away by the footage we are getting out of the FS700. Here is a short blog post from the director (more of a personal story, but it's got some frame grabs peppered around in there).

Excited to see what else they add to this recorder. 4K compressed would be a godsend, we've been transcoding our 3TB of footage for a couple days now.

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, the Prorez transfer tool is now up. http://www.convergent-design.com/Downloads.aspx
I tried it out, and after a fearsome "use at your own risk" disclaimer, it seems to work fine. There's a simple drag-and-drop interface for source and destination, and successfully took the 4gb chunks of the 4K2HD media and consolidated into one clip. (I haven't tried the option to limit the final file size, but i'm curious how much filesizes can be reduced while retaining image quality... I'd guess a dedicated program like Compressor would be better for this but i may be wrong.)

I did this to consolidate with previously downloaded clips, and the down side was that the process took much longer than i'd hoped - about 2X real time (1hr 20min for a 40min clip), and you can only do one clip at a time - so it's not something you can leave to process overnight if you shot more than one clip. [edit - i realized you can chose the top level folder and all the clips will be consolidated.]
I haven't tried this right off the SSD card as a method of ingesting footage but seems like it should work, and 2X realtime is about what i've been getting for that process anyways.

Yes, the idea is to use this as the tool to ingest footage off the SSD so there is no extra step. The download time is nearly identical for offload; maybe a 20 minute offload will become 21 minutes. It's really pretty painless.

I was just about to plunk down the fee to activate recording on my 7Q and do some shooting and testing today and guess what, Convergent Design's website is down - bad host name. Jeez!

Their site's up here - maybe it was just a brief blip?

I just tried it and it is fine...

The WEB can be hard to deal with. It may be a local DNS problem.

Well it was up a few minutes after I first tried and posted. Thanks everybody for verifying it for me. I just paid for the raw option. Now to use it. :)

I've just been shooting for an intensive 7 days in 4K2HD mode and I still can't believe the image coming from it. Closer to the Alexa look than I ever thought possible with this camera. Most of the shoot was run and gun style with the 7Q in an EVF position on a shoulder rig. It's worth every penny as a monitor alone! Competing in a 48 hour film competition starting tonight and just can't wait to get back to it :-)

Mitch, Athena? Or another announcement? (It's up on newsshooter)
Athena is a freakin' awesome machine and I think a lot of people here could find it (her?) quite useful. I think Matt Allard at newsshooter.com has a good take on it. Here's our announcement.

http://www.convergent-design.com/Su.../ArticleID/22/NAB-Product-Preview-Athena.aspx

That said, I was referring to something else. Something in addition to Athena, and something in addition to our File Combiner app becoming available. We get very little sleep in the days leading up to NAB. ;-)

has a front panel featuring an LCD display for status info and confidence monitoring, a 2.5” SSD slot (up to 2GB current spec) and deck controls;
2GB SSD or 2TB SSD?
Could we use those also for the O7Q?
