Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

Which to me is insanity to release something with a problem that you have a fix for but haven't rolled out because of a codec licensing issue. Sad. I'm still deciding to keep this thing or not, just still really upset about the whole situation haha
Same here. Like buying a car with no windshield. (Will be installed later)

USB 3 is pretty good. with USB 3 and Thunderbolt, I get about 15min per drive. That's when transferring to my RAID (fast write speeds). A guy I shot with last week was transferring to a Mac Pro that apparently had a USB 3.0 card, data was writing to a SAN (which they are fiber'd into), and it took about 45 minutes. Not sure where the weak link was in that chain.

15min per drive, this is scary. How you use thunderbolt? any SATA cable/dock for SSD that is having thunderbolt? Beside that, the odyssey 7Q have any port can transfer via thunderbolt to mac without pulling out the SSD?

I've tested many USB3 (SATA6) Adapter but never went over 190MB/s, now I use the Delock Thunderbolt Converter (it needs external power!) and it runs up to 360MB/s, so 256GB you will go in 11.8min and 512gb in 23.7mins. Thats pretty fast and stable (on some USB3 I had to start 2 times) but you need a fast target drive (RAID) as well (makes sense).

Only made it to part of the Abel event. Got to look quickly at the beta firmware. It looked pretty good, the fs700 4k to 1080p is a separate option you load into memory like 4k or multistream.

One thing that made me very sad was when Mitch said they were still thinking of not allowing recording LUTs at all. That would be terrible since it would mean there would be no options besides recording in SLOG2 which absolutely requires grading or at least the extra step of applying the right LUT in post. It would be pretty critical to be able to record broadcast-ready video and to be able to bake-in my intended look so I can retain control over the look when I have no control over post (which is often).
I agree. Without the ability to record LUTs you're confining it to certain jobs. There are many broadcast jobs which require a Rec 709 look off the bat and will not want to apply LUTs or grade in post rather just expect me to provide 'correct looking material' to edit with. Nine times out of ten I can correct and supply but it would be damn useful to have the option.

We're using the Seagate USB 3 adapter, copying to G-RAID thunderbolt (set as RAID 0) using a Mac Book Pro, transfer is at around 260 MBps (using Pathfinder)

Oh that sounds bad. I too would want recorded LUTs. So just to confirm that this is an issue on the 4K super sampled HD option as you HAVE to set the camera to SLOG2 with the 4K SDI stream?

Thanks for that, yeah i have both SSD and HDD RAID with me. I will try with odyssey7q original sata adapter 1st, and later will buy thunderbolt one for faster transfer.

Using Seagate thunderbolt adapter and I go around 360 MBps (no power supply needed)
Does it also works with 512gb+ ssd drives? I thought you may get some write errors if a bigger sdd is used with the Seagate Adapter (please correct me if i'm wrong).

@Pgale & Noah
Because the LUT issue, may its still possible to record the applied LUT to a supersampled ProRes with an external recoder (like the Hyperdeck) over SDI-out, so you would end up with a slog on O7q internal and the Rec709 LUT applied to the external recorder, also the trigger works btw! May a good solution if you can give away a third SSD to the client and keep your CD-SSD babies.

My USB3 dock does no more than 170MB/s, i'd love to hear of any that will (for a PC). On thunderbolt i can do more but my PC workstation is connected to my 10Gbe network and that's what i'm offloading to. I don't know why apple have such an aversion to 10gbe, but i digress...

cheers
Paul

Probably more practical to use another camera.

Hmm I only own 256 GB drives but im assuming it would work fine with 512 GB... anyone who can confirm this?

Please can you make a new thread to discuss transfer speeds.

Each of us are having a minor heart attack seeing new replies in this thread, hoping for a released firmware...

outch.. only sLog output to the 7Q also in 10bit popular codec? I shouldnt have sold my atomos blade so quick.

True, even if 7Q will become a beast with time, people who do this for a living buy this product with the specs specified. And honestly there isnt much of a "defence" not roll out the firmware for all the bugs because of a codec.. Neither do I think it is a good idea to tell people that the update is gonna come in february when its clear that even IF they would have got the approval in mid february, they still prob would not be able to make the feb deadline. Especially with all the paperwork in mind.. This is not something you simply overlook.

I can fully understand why people get pissed..

And to some of you the 7Q might already be a beast, but what about all the ones that have numerous issues and can bearly use it? You might be lucky but that doesnt mean that there are people less fortunate than you.
So with that in mind this has been handled poorly and I think it is a good thing that Convergent design doesnt have any true competitor when it comes to 7Q. If the did then they might have been in serious trouble.

I to want to know when a realistic ETA can be expected. Not when you get an approval, when I can update my product.

I agree to some extent. There really needs to be an agile (software development process) or JIT approach to releasing bug fixes that doesn't rely on major features that could get delayed for whatever reason. Most users will accept delays to some extent for delayed new features but won't accept long delays for critical bug fixes that affect the features we have now, especially if those bug fixes have been done and are just waiting. Maybe CD needs to look hard at this and somehow separate the two.

I'll also note that at the event Mitch mentioned he hoped the firmware would be released by the end of this week or maybe beginning of next week.

There's no doubt that C-D's initial advertising claims were exaggerated. Can't make any excuses for that. However, I do think that once the firmware matures, these kinds of bugs will get less and less. For anyone using this hardware to make a living, for anyone who has to deliver to a customer or client, this is not yet a product ready for prime time.

We only have the USB3 adapter, but works fine with 512 SSDs, although I don't trust it with the native copy in Mac finder, way too flakey.
