Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

As fond as I am of this v expensive toy, I need it to start earning it's keep, starting with some green screen idents Thursday. Minimum requirement - 10bit Pro Res 422. We live in hope.

What case is that btw? Looking for something to keep my 7q safe whenever it arrives. Its on backorder right now :(
 
Mitch is doing a 7Q presentation at abel in NYC at 6pm today. I imagine the upcoming firmware will be loaded on their demo units so at least I'll hopefully get to try it out. It's a free event if anyone is interested.

At this rate, I think our best bet for getting the firmware is to organize some sort of Ocean's 11 heist at this event...

We've shot a lot and haven't experienced any dropped frames in Raw 2K. A bad SDI cable might be causing your dropped frames issue. On the other hand, maybe others are having this issue...

We have our case finally coming out in a few weeks. After a lot of back & forth with the manufacturer, we are using a Nanuk 910 shell with a sweet custom foam insert. It is a rigid foam with removeable inserts (not pick & pluck so it won't fall apart). By adding/subtracting the inserts, you can hold the Odyssey bare, with one of our battery backs, with a Nebtek cage or an Ocean Video back, or even with our Teradek wireless battery back. There's also room for cables and SSDs. The Nanuk 910 is a tiny case, and it was a task designing this case to hold all of these configurations, but in the end it does so elegantly and efficiently.

I have not had a single dropped frame even at 240 fps 2K. And I have shot quite a bit.

I would definitely make sure your BNC cable is 3G tested and approved as well as the actual crimp BNC fittings, if you made the cable yourself. If you buy them make sure they are 3G rated, and test them before using for real. I always carry a couple spares, and a couple spare power cables for the Odyssey as well, stuff happens.

No dropped frames here either. And I've shot about 8 hours of footage. I suspect it's the cable. Try another (3G one). If you're still having problems, contact support.
 
I like the ultra thin sdi cables, but is there any possibility of signal interference with such a small casing?

As long as the cable and connectors are rated 3G or better (6G) then it is fine.

But even so there can be a bad cable, thinner cables are easier to degrade by stepping on them or putting a very sharp bend in them, slightly thicker cables resist sharp bends and are less frail if stepped on or shut in a door or lid to a case, who has not done that...

Over the years I have had 5 or 6 BNC cables go bad, that is over 4 decades. I have actually lost more than I have had go bad. I still have some 20 year old BNC cables that actually work fine for 3G even though they are not rated for it. But play it safe and use good 3G cables.
