Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

Nicer? Neither look nice and pretty much absolutely have to have nicer grading added :P

I wouldn't want to have to light or monitor in Slog2 or 3, but they are ok for storing your image in a known container that is easy to apply prebuilt LUTs to. Frankly I'd probably prefer to just always shoot with a gamma/LUT curve that isn't log but looks pretty and keeps all the sensor data unclipped and without the annoying problems that all the non-slog2 gammas have on the fs700.
I think this is the best situation and one I look forward to using with the 7Q. I've always found ultra flat profiles to be a pain to shoot with but sometimes the extra latitude is more important. Using the LUTs (with the fixed waveform coming in this month's firmware update), will give us the contrasty/saturated look while retaining all the latitude from Slog2. And the waveform will be able to show us the Slog2 exposure levels so even if the LUT looks clipped, you'll be able to know if the footage is retaining highlight/shadow detail.

Mitch, thanks for taking time to answer my question, your explanation is crystal clear !

So if S-Log 2 is already getting out the most of the sensor, the next best thing in line for us greedy FS700 users is to have some nice LUTs to get close to "film look" ? (yes, I do remember film !)

What is the "level of interoperability", if I can say so, between the LUTs that are gonna be implemented in the OD7Q and the one we can have inside Resolve ?

O-T: it's fun to notice that even if the technology in audio/video is moving at a tremendous pace, one always want to emulate as close as possible analog technology, be it film stock for moving pictures or analog tape for audio !
The interoperability will eventually be absolute.

For programable LUTs, first we plan to implement ASC CDLs, which are relatively simple 1D-LUTs with just 10 settings. Some time after that we will implement full image cubes, meaning that we will support 3D-LUTs as created by Resolve or other programs.

Hey guys,

I'm still nutting out (and learning) the Resolve workflow. Resolve has a nifty auto-sync feature to link the WAV files to the DNG sequences, except that it only works via timecode (i believe.)
The issue I'm running into is that the WAV files timecode always starts at 0 seconds where-as the DNG Sequences have the correct rec run timecode from the camera.

Mitch is there a way, or is there going to be a way to get the WAV files to have the same timecode as the clips?

I have this issue as well!

Hi Mitch

Do you have any idea of the time frame, for Shipping to European distribueres with the 3.0 firmware installed? Of course after it has been released.

Hi folks,

In the midst of the 4K and RAW frenzy, I want to point out one of the great features of the Odyssey7Q which is barely talked about :

TIMECODE I/O

Lacking on the FS700, having an LTC IN/OUT port on the OD7Q is a really great asset for syncing devices together, be it a sound recorder or other cameras.

Thanks Convergent Design for this must-have !

I know many of us are expecting the firmware to drop on Friday... it would be a pleasant surprise to have it come tomorrow... I've got a couple shoots I could use it on! :)

Is there any plans anyone has heard of using a canon 5d type battery plate for odyssey? Lpe6 batteries I think they are called...

Seems like liess than ideal to use 7.2v 1800mah (13Wh) batteries with a device that has a peak draw of 15W. At 8-15W draw seems like you'd be lucky to get an hour of life if it even works. It puts you right around a 1C discharge rate, which is sort high for li-ion I think, and also not great since most chargers are slower than 1C, so your discharge cycles will be faster than your charge and you might need 10 batteries to get through a day even if you constantly swap batteries on chargers. Also in practice a 1hr battery life means you'll be changing batteries every 30min to avoid risk of the battery dying during the take and likely doing 20+ battery changes in a day... Maybe you could get away with it with a hot swap dual-position plate, but why not just use higher capacity batteries?

Good info. I use them on my 7" ac7 oled and they work great and last a while using 2, but sound like not a good choice for the odyssey. What's the general consensus on runtime with the sony batteries?

I guess the AC7 has a similar power draw (12W) so I'm sure the same setup on a 7Q is fine. How long does it last with those two batteries? About 2 hrs? I guess the concern of having plenty of battery life might be greater on the 7Q since having a monitor die during a take is not as big a deal as having your recorder die.

I guess I always prefer where possible to minimize battery changes and use a big battery that lasts most of the day and only needs one charger, but that has to be balanced against weight and size.

They last about 3 hrs give or take. But I also use dtap, I'll probably go sony plate and dtap for odyssey I suppose

I can fit those Canon SLR batteries on my Odyssey plate easily, I have to have Alex ship me the plate (plastic battery fitting), so I could ship you one by the end of the week if you order today or Tuesday, just PM me.

We do offer a bunch of custom builds of various items on our WEBstore. I should probably feature this more on the site. We often have shooters come here and stay overnight and we make their custom parts, so they can take them with them when they leave, not everyone stays overnight. But the valley is a cool place to hang out, with lots of skiing etc...

So just PM me or send me an email or call even and tell Sharyn what you need. I could set you up with 2 Canon battery jacks on one plate if you like.

How long will an FS700 + Odyssey 7Q power on for using a 99 watt v-mount battery? I plan on going V-mount for the first time.

A 970 Sony brought me through a whole day. I powered down when ever it was possible we had long break too due to change of location. I cannot sum up the hours and there is no indicator neither on the odyssey nor on the charger so I don't know how much power was still left. I shot about 100mins 25p / 350GB

I'm on a longform shoot right now running the fs700 and alphatron (haven't bought odessy sunhood yet) off a 7s idx , and the oddessy off a swit as I forgot to order a dtap!. 2x256gb ssd's running dpx in HD ran out in 47m. Recording internally as well, just wanted to compare the extra quality. Originally was going to mix some raw in there while testing depending on sun/shade for afternoon, but forgot I cannot swap on same ssd's yet!

7s will run the fs700 forever by itself. I left it for a bit with the alphatron on and it started to suck juice. I've shot some long outrigger canoe race 2nd half broll slomo, and that sucks the juice too,

So if using it as a recorder, odd's are you might run out of ssd's before a 7s. Slomo and recorder... Probably more so. I might do a test next week when not shooting and just leave that combo running in 2k raw. That would at least have an idea of a 7s running slomo even when the recorder stops recording (as it will have run out of space), the fs700 will still be chewing and spitting output. And I guess if you are running it more as a monitor only... different again.
I guess this will change again with popular codec and space.... can't come soon enough. I guess 4k longform non raw is still going to be dpx though for some time, so no cropping in for action and just leaving it running.

I run a SWIT 90, powering my FS700 with SELP18-200 and O7Q. The setup runs about two hours, continuously; but, it really depends on how much zooming I do. That SELP is a real power hog and can run the battery down in an hour if I zoom a lot.
