Odyssey7Q April 2014 Firmware Update

I just posted in another thread about this. The next firmware update will be in under a month (maybe a lot under) and while we are not sure what will make it in there, one thing we know will NOT make it is the 4K compressed codec.

Excellent, thank you for the update. Compressed 4k would be great but I'm sure it's full of headaches and can imagine that it's hard to nail 100%.

Thanks for the update and the hard work you guys are doing Mitch. It would be great if we got 4k2hd at 60fps in the next firmware. Definitely looking forward to 4k Prores when that does eventually drop though.

Mitch,
As I understand it, you can't use S&Q with the 4K2HD option. I'm guessing you're doing one hell of a lot of image processing already, so going to higher frame rates is out of the question. Is this likely to change in the future? Thanks.

Currently we make Apple ProRes(HQ) HD files from the 4K RAW signal, not from 2K. The challenge with taking the 2K RAW at highspeed and converting it to ProRes is that we have to do everything in realtime. In post your computer can sit there all day crunching numbers if needed, but we only have milliseconds. Part of ProRes encoding is that there is a relatively narrow window for the bitrate, meaning that 220mbps must be maintained whether it is a static image or a constantly changing one. Think about what people often shoot in high speed: splashing water, explosions, stuff in motion. So blasting through all those frames while maintaining the data rate and delivering an image we feel is acceptable, well that's a big challenge.

Not saying no, saying that we're working on it to determine what is feasible. If we can do it, we will.

Hi Mitch,
Sorry, I don't have my unit here with me to test. At 2K Raw 200fps, are there any playback options onset from the odyssey?
Thanks.

is it possible to add this in future firmware updates?
1) can playback slow motion footage in normal speed in 7Q.
2) can add fast forward, reverse, pause for play back.

These will much more easy for checking footage especially for slow motion it take long time to playback for double checking.

Already in the plans.

They do play back in slow mo, just at 50p, so 100fps. At least they do on mine...
Sorry, you are of course correct. I should have said that they do not play back in full slow motion, meaning that they will not follow the timebase setting you adjust the Odyssey too but instead lock to the timebase of the signal sent. FS700 locks the high speed to either 50p or 60p.

Hi Mitch, I think it should be said that this can be fixed in Davinci by interpreting the footage to 25p/30p, then you will get the full slow-mo. I didn't want all my footage to be in a 50p wrapper and then have to slow-mo by 50% in post. It took me a while to figure out how to do it (so many options in Davinci!). I think at some point someone needs to do an in depth tutorial on transcoding 7Q RAW, as the current tutorials have some holes in them.

unfortunately tje the workflow for the raw is still a bit of a mess. There is no ACES route and the Yrgb route realies on dodgy LUTs.

Hey Mitch, not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I will try anyway!

I'm a Blackmagic user primarily (BMCC and Pocket, but we do shoot FS700 quite frequently) and am looking at getting a new OLED monitor. My question is - in the current firmware is there any ability to apply a custom LUT (or even just an average REC 709 LUT) to the BMCC "film" signal? This is an essential feature I'm after in a new monitor. If it's not currently implemented is it likely to be implemented soon?

Only REC 709 LUT at the moment. I think the proper LUT's will take quite a while to arrive.

Cool. I'm assuming that will work across a variety of LOG camera inputs (so BMCC's film LOG not just S-LOG2 cameras) albeit not with perfect accuracy obviously?

We will soon offer a LOG-to-REC709 viewing LUT for several camera's HD video outputs. But realize that the LOG from one camera will not match the LOG from another. This has to do with how the manufacturer chooses to implement a LOG function as well as the capabilities of their sensors and processing systems. Using an incorrect LOG function may result in an improper image on the monitor. We will also be implementin some basic monitor adjustments to help adjust the look of the monitor, which may mitigate this. Eventually we will also have completely custom LUT creation available for the Odyssey7Q, so that you can design your own LUT for whatever signal and look you desire.

Hey,

I've been away from the forum on the last couple months (since the release of the highly anticipated and highly delayed firmware update), and I was wondering if you guys have already pulled the 4K 120fps 4sec raw recording.
I'm impressed to see that no further firmware releases had come, I though it would be more frequent now without that apple certification...

Anyway, my interest is on the 120fps 4K, it outputs it at 60fps right? Any updates regarding this?
Thank you
