Odyssey7Q April 2014 Firmware Update

Good news for any film convert fans: I have lent them my FS700 and 7Q to create a profile for SLog2 on both the internal AVCHD and hopefully 4K2HD mode on the 7Q. They are working their wizardry today and tomorrow so hopefully it won't be long before we see the results!

Is there an up to date list on what is being worked on for the next FW? I'm just worried eventually this long list will go away when the next product comes out :-)

That would be great to know for sure. I'm hoping for 4K2HD @60fps the most. Or probably a toss up between that and 4K compressed. I want it ALL!!!!!!

YES!! For now i take the bmcc film plugin & f55 s_log work great too!

Has anyone else found they like the look of SLOG2 with just saturation boosted in post? I'm really liking what I see with no LUT at all, just boosting the saturation (in PPro, I was just playing around with increasing saturation with fast color corrector from 100 (default) to 200 (maximum)). Perhaps there is a way for CD to just allow us to set the color saturation of our recorded images? I'd love to be able to record SLOG2 with just a saturation boost built in. I imagine this will be quite possible with LUTs and whatnot whenever those are supported, but perhaps something so simple could be implemented sooner? And it might be more favorable to CD who I know has had issues with the idea of even allowing recording LUTs at all since for the most part you could easily recover the original SLOG2 by just desaturating a bit.

I find I still darken the shadows a hair and bring mids/highs down a touch (if I did the ETTR method) but I'm with you. I don't use the LUT, I just turn the saturation up to 200 and really dig the look. Clean, nice colors. I still do some grading after that if I'm going for a certain mood, but I just edited a non-profit video (not a project to push anything stylized on) and simply saturating the Slog2 clips did the job.

I don't use the LUT either right now. I like the look of the Slog 2 4K2HD with a little Colorista II boost of saturation to .4, maybe .5 (defult is 0) and a slight drop of the shadows.

Now i have to be honest and say i've never used a LUT and i was a little worried getting the 7Q thinking "oh man i'll have to use a LUT how will i know what the footage will look like?, this is crazy". But i find i'm really happy without one! Might use a custom LUT later if i can set it how i've been doing my quick grade.

Awesome! Thanks for that :)

I'm shooting slog2 and when I bring it into After Effects (through adobe camera raw) it always looks really dark compared to the avchd copy that I have saved. Is this some setting I have or is this normal?

Oh, and I'm not sure if anyone else was having this issue but I was always getting a 50p wrapper when I was importing into Davinci. So my 200fps @ 25p was 100fps @ 50p or more annoyingly my 25p became 12.5p @ 50p. Although you don't lose any frames, it's annoying to slow it down in post. To interpret the footage correctly;

>> In the media tab, highlight all your clips
>> Right click and select "clip attributes"
>> Select the "Video" tab
>> Under "Video frame rate" select the frame base you shot at i.e. 25p for me

Sorry if this is obvious for some people but I'm new to Davinci and this took me an hour or so to figure out, due to all the other options for frames rates

If we did that and then for whatever reason had to leave something out on the release y'all would get mad. So better to surprise you with all the goodness when it comes.

For those that like this look but want to shift the shadows some, try doing the same process using the Rec709 (800%) setting. That's been my workflow on many projects for years.

I think this will really come down to your lighting scheme. I shot a short this past weekend for the Madison 48 Hour Film Project, and we lit it to taste with SLOG2 outputting to 4K2HD mode in the Odyssey 7Q and I found that for our artificially-lit scenes, we didn't really need any CC except some slight corrections to match shots (tiny bit of gamma). This was because we lit the scene with pretty contrasty light. This was extremely helpful, as we wouldn't really have time for a CC pass in post. We did find that in our scenes with natural light, I did have to add quite a bit of contrast in post, since we had sooo much DR available (12+ stops is very accurate).

The point of my post is that there are obviously a lot of different ways to use these tools, and testing is key to ensure you know exactly how best they work for you. I fully expect to use a 3D LUT on future projects, in which I will light a bit more traditionally.

Something of a feature request here. What about having colors, other than grey, on either side of Green in the false color. I'm setting a range for green as skin tones. But it's hard to tell sometimes if i'm getting over or under because slightly different shades of grey sit on either side.

In my mind, i'd love to set something like this....

Yellow 50%
Pink 38-45%
Green 40%

Then as you play with your exposure, you'd quickly see if you're getting over or under rather than have the giant grey expanse around skin tones.

Or maybe i'm a noob and just need to get used to it. :)

The ranges have some adjustability, and I have suggested that we expand the adjustability range. So we could get the colors to reach down to the exposure zones you want.
