Odyssey7Q April 2014 Firmware Update

Another question about the Odyssey 7Q. What is the typical run time powering the Odyssey 7Q with a single Sony NP-F970 L-Series battery. Assuming the unit will be recording using 4K2HD mode. I am not asking for a set-in-stone answer, just a ballpark.

It depends on how much time you spend recording and what it is you are recording. In standby (not recording) it draws less, and if there is a ton of action going on in the scene that means more computing so Odyssey draws more. Not huge differences mind you, but in theory it can range from about 10.8w to 11.5w. So assuming worst case scenario of 11.5w draw, a 47.5w NPF970 battery should still run for more than four hours. Realistically I would budget closer to three as you never want to get close to the edge of performance.

Hey Mitch,

Is Onion Skinning still in the works for th 7Q? I do green screen on occasion and it sounds like such a great feature to be able to line up the camera and actors to match the green screen plate. Also, how would it work? Would you just have an image on a usb stick or something?

Thanks
Still in the works. Functionality still TBD.

Mitch, how does the odyssey 7q compare to what we know of atmos new 4k monitor/recorder? What is this 12g sdi they speak of?

I am not sure if Mitch (or maybe someone else) can answer this, I am considering buying an Ocean Video Mounting Bracket for the Odyssey 7Q http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1026214-REG/ocean_video_ep_3_xx_enduropower_for_odyssey.html

Can you mount the Convergent Design Battery Plate for Sony L-Series batteries (CD-OD-SLPLATE) to the back of this bracket? I know this question would be best posed to Ocean Video, but I left a voice message for them yesterday and still have not received a phone call back.

Thank you,

Is there an SDK for the 7Q and an app store? So we can write games, real-time green screen / background subtraction, custom live effects, etc. ;)

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? ;-)

Seriously, it is not my place to comment on the products of a competitor. It would be rude of me. Convergent Design welcomes healthy competition, and we feel strongly about our product. We also know what it takes to do what the Odyssey7Q does, and we are happy to state that we deliver a product right now that works, and will do even more in the future.

Yes, the four mounting holes on the back of the Odyssey7Q that are used to attach the battery plate are replicated on the back of the Ocean Video Enduro Plate specifically so that our battery plates (or someone else's) can be used.

I believe the head of Ocean ideo is currently filming out of the country, so that is likely why you have not yet received a reply.

There will be an SDK made available, but it has not yet been developed. Hadn't thought about doing an App Store, but since we have the mechanism in place on our website I guess it's possible. We're you planning to make your own version of Angry Birds?

Angry Birds is 2D- last game (simulation) I did was 3D: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmVcE50RChM (custom physics engine, cubic surfaces for ground)). Though 2D games are fun and super popular right now (Angry Birds uses Erin Catto's Box2D physics engine which I'm sure would run on your hardware)... Is there a GPU on the 7Q? (capable of 2D/3D graphics/texturing). Accelerometer, magnetometer, gyro? (these sensors could be useful in creating real-time metadata to allow for advanced tracking and post IS, etc.).

Hey Mitch - How goes the 4K/HDMI solution? I would love to be able to use the Odyssey with my FS700 AND GH4 (without the YAGH) , when it arrives.

Hey Mitch, I may be drawing a blank here, but the website(specifically fs700 page) doesn't seem to clearly list which modes/formats are currently supported.

Following the firmware thread I have an idea of the formats, but still a little vagueon them and run times. Wouldn't it be more convenient for customers to clearly see the current supported features and formats vs the features and formats that are still in development?

All in good fun, but I'm not going to open up trade secrets as to what's going on in the Odyssey. If you're serious about developing apps, please contact me offlist.

It should be there, I'll have to look.

We're currently undergoing a complete revamp of our website. This and many other issues will be addressed.

I believe the info you see is in the latest release notes as well as the current manual.

Question about recording the 4K2HD. You select the 4K Raw option on the camera, and can use either Slog2 or REC709 800%, right?
Now, do any of the picture profile settings effect the final recording? Like lowering the Detail Level to -2 within the picture profile. Do the PP settings mean anything at this point, or do i just forget all that and let the 7Q do it's thing for the best possible picture?

I get to test it soon as my camera comes back from the Sony repair center (the torturous wait!) but i've been trying to prepare so i know what's going on when i hook it all up. :)

no, it's just REC709, sLog2, REC 709 (800%) No other setting in PP affects the image. Go back in this thread for details, it's been discussed before.

You can select S-Log2, Rec709 (800%) or Rec709. The other settings in the Picture Profile will have no effect, but other global settings in the camera such as white balance and gain (aka ISO) will.
