Odyssey7Q April 2014 Firmware Update

Hey Mitch, is anything sent out from the LTC port during high framerate recording? Would it be possible (theoretically at least) to have the option for a frame sync pulse over that port at all framerates? I understand that's a pretty niche feature, but it'd be very useful for motion control integration and other synchronization uses.

I don't know what the possibility for this would be. I'll put it to the engineering staff. I wonder how many people would ever use such a feature, five?

Mitch can you be clear about this? Od7 hdmi will someday work with GH4 or A7S 4k? Or it never will?
We have not yet determined our implementation from several options, so here is what I can state now:

We will have a path to allow support of 4K via HDMI on the Odyssey7Q. This will include support for the GH4 and the A7S.

Hi Mitch,

Is there an ETA on 4k raw at 120fps? Im really interested in this and am hoping its coming soon.

Hi Mitch,

Any chance that 4K pro-res @ 60fps and 4K2HD 60fps coming soon? I have an art project where 4K would be really useful. Or better yet, Sony compressed 4K RAW :)

Thanks

Having been previously burned by making schedule forecasts that we did not meet, I am no longer going to give such ETAs. I can tell you that these functionalities are in active development and as soon as they are available we will let you know.

You should never plan your shoots for something that does not yet exist. There are way too many stops along the road to absolutely state when something will happen.

We're getting Sony compressed raw?

FYI, since the last update my 7Q is working so much smoother. Before the update I was a little nervous to use it on shoots, but now... It's really mind blowing how amazing the footage is. I'm doing some side by sides with Epic (non Dragon) footage and I'd say it's on par, especially the DR. Kudos to CD!

Hi Mitch,

While I agree with this to a certain extent, when initial features were promised by CD, good paying customers should not be kept completely in the dark as to the company's going ons. There needs to be a balance between specific forecast dates and a total blackout of when certain features are to be released. And that's the tricky part.

Yes, it took almost 5 months to get the first firmware / features out and there was bad juju because of missed forecast dates, but customers will be far more angry if we wait another 5 months for the next set of features without any information at all. The Apple certification was serious drama, but at least we knew what was coming. Not knowing anything is far worse for customer relations.

Just because no specific dates are stated does not mean accountability is gone. If anything that means Convergent needs to "surprise" us more quickly and frequently with solid updates / features to keep people happy. An accountability of a different sort. So pick your poison :)

I feel like CD is close. If you just come out with 4k2HD and 4K ProRes both at 60fps, you've met your initial promises and anything else is just a bonus. But since it was advertised as the goal, it needs to come sooner than later.

Lastly, please don't take this personally Mitch. I know you have a hard job as the face of CD (damned if you do, damned if you don't) and I greatly appreciate your efforts and the 7Q is amazing. You and Dan have been like Batman and Robin, and you guys can fight over who is Batman.

Someone at NAB convergent design booth said to me in JUNE! (4k Pro-res) maybe...

Mitch was really busy with someone :P

Yeah, I guess you don't really want the same again on the forums and twitter, being shouted at every few minutes! ;) lol

Having said that, are you still committed to getting the firmware bug fix out soon for the pixel zoom corruption etc - that would seem to be pretty vital to get out ASAP. Recorded image corruption is the very worst thing possible I'd guess and I'm surprised that if you have a fix already that we've not seen a super quick update being released.

I am looking for some recommendations for high quality, very flexible and lightweight 3g SDI cables for the Odyssey. I want something that has small unobtrusive connectors. I normally buy from B&H, so any links would be appreciated.

Thank you,

I have never said such a thing. Sorry if my last post seemed to imply this.

We will have far more frequent firmware updates. Note that our April firmware release was less than one month after our March release. I like this, but I can't absolutely promise the pace. That said, I will reiterate something I stated before, which is that moving forward we are engineering our firmware updates so that they will not be dependent on the approval of an outside company. In practice that means that we will always have SOMETHING to release even if the big thing you might be waiting for is not in that particular update. But the updates will continue to roll along.

I'm just not going to hang my hat on what comes when. If you ask me if something is coming then I will tell you if it is in our current plans. If you ask me if something is coming sooner or later, I will try to indicate as much as possible if it is a priority as opposed to something further down the list.

It is a very long list.

Good example. We are committed to having this bug corrected for our next firmware release. In other words, as soon as we feel we have it locked down, we will release a patch. If anything else is ready at the same time, we will release that as well.

How about the SDI cables manufactured by Convergent Design? Only US$20 list, and they come in a standard three foot length. Custom orders also accepted. Ask any of our dealers worldwide.

That's a good way to do it I feel. Not so specific as to a date, but so the customers are not left completely un-knowing either. Looking forward to more good stuff :)

The "pressure of customer expectations" will be more comfortable, after some important features are ready to use. ProRes 4K will be key, of course, and development should be on track. Yes, keeping us updated what is on the list or what may suffer a delay is a good policy, as long as estimated availability is hard to predict.

I have the pleasure to congratulate myself to be the proud owner of a unit now. My dealer received a significant batch finally, just the battery plate is missing. I hope that little Dude will be shipped as soon as Convergent Design got settled after their office move. Weather will improve and it's more fun using the new setup outside. With the need of a hood, I guess.
