Odyssey7Q April 2014 Firmware Update

Sorry guys, off on a brief holiday. Paul, thanks for posting this to the forum.

We have not seen this problem a lot but enough that we felt it prudent to issue the warning. We will make a fix available as soon as possible.

Thanks Mitch,

Do you have a view on that other corruption problem that was reported on Twitter - from @gabfilms - a peculiar issue, something specific to F3 output or something more general?

Cheers.

Hey Mitch, i notice you had a Convergent Design sun hood on the 7Q at NAB. Is that available now, if not any idea when it might be? Thanks. The little director's screen rig you had looked great.
The hood we had on display at our booth was a rapid prototype one-off. The production units will be available in May. It is a petite, three-sided hood that mounts to the two 1/4"x20 sockets on the sides of the Odyssey and folds flat for storage when not mounted to the recorder. US$80 list, available for preorder now from any of our dealers.

We also showed a nice stand for the Odyssey that does triple-duty. First it functions as a table stand, wih a 15 degree tilt back for comfortable viewing and good balance with or without a battery mounted. Second the stand also incorporates a 5/8" baby socket to attach it to a light stand or c-stand. And third the stand is tall enough to both protect the connectors on the base of the Odyssey while also functioning as a nice "chest rest" when one wears the Odyssey with our wireless rig via a neck strap. We showed this configuration at NAB with a $5 guitar strap I appropriated from my son's Stratocaster for the week. As a chest rest, the stand not only protects the connectors but also pushes out the Odyssey away from one's body so that the user doesn't have too look straight down and strain his or her neck. It's quite comfortable.

Available in May. US$85 list. Available for preorder from any of our dealers.

If it is the director's handheld rig, I believe it is the one Nebtek made. Check their website.
In our booh were rigs from Nebtak, Ocean Video, and Solid Camera, as well as our own. We also showed accessories from Hawk-Woods, Oppenheimer Camera, PortaBrace, and Westside AV.

We are working with that user to determine the issue. So far he is the only one to have reported the problem and we have yet to be able to replicate it. We will continue to analyze the problem and may issue an RMA to test if there is a fault within his individual unit.

Mitch,

Having a functional remote, either wired or via Blutooth, would be very convenient for me. Any idea when either of these will be available?

Hi Mitch,

Any chance of some photo's of the accessories you are offering? It's one thing that is often a letdown on CD's website. The accessories are near impossible to find any imformation on: battery plates, cables, even an SSD photo would be nice. Most suppliers don't show an image either.
Thanks

Yes, this is actually an active project we are working on. We have a new staff member whose primary job function is to revamp our website. An accessories page is something I specifically requested. I also have a video coming soon. In the meantime, I'll snap some quick photos and post them here.

*** Post edited. Seems I got the product codes wrong. ***

Here are some images. Don't ask me why some of them appear rotated or flipped. I just shot these quickly on my phone.

- First is the case. It's a Nanuk 910 with custom foam insert. Note how small it is! Hard foam means less is needed for protecting the gear. The ctout for the Odyssey comes with removeable layers of foam so no matter what back or mount you have on it will fit snugly. One of the foam layers is shown here. The shape is dictated by our Teradek wireless kit, so it will hold that mount with the two Teradek Bolt receivers attached and everything plugged in. The rectangular cutout is big enough to hold SSDs, cables, USB adapter, batteries, etc. US$150 list, available now. CD-OD-CASE

- The stand. All aluminum but it only weighs 5 ounces. Tall enough to protect the cables on base of Odyssey. Tilted back for comfortable viewing on tabletop plus good balance on stand. Fits onto 5/8" light stand. Plenty of clearance for any large battery bracket. Functions as a "chest offset" when Odyssey is worn with neckstrap so the operator doesn't have to look straight down. US$85 list, pre-order now; available in May. CD-OD-AL-TS (that's for Aluminum Table Stand)

- Sunshade. Please note that the pictured item is a 3D-printed rapid prototype. The shipping product will be vacuum-molded polycarbonate. Three-sided shade attaches to the side 1/4"x20 mount holes. If you have another item such as a mount which uses these side sockets, the sunshade's bolts can be removed and you can pass through the shade into the Odyssey. The shade folds up very flat and can rest atop the Odyssey within the case. Note that when the shade is folded the mounting bolts do not protrude long enough to make contact with any surface, so you won't scratch the Odyssey screen in transport. Also note in the image of the shade mounted that the drooping of the top is because this is only a prototype unit. US$80 list, pre-order now; available in May. CD-OD-HOOD

Lastly take a look at Yours Truly wearing the complete wireless kit. Odyssey7Q w/ Teradek Battery Plate (complete wite 2x Teradek Bolt receivers, stand, sunshade and $5 guitar strap. Note how the stand places the screen at a comfortable viewing position while also protecting the connectors. Handsome devil.

Hey Mitch, When do think SSD card cases will become available? Do you have a picture of them?
Hoping for them soon. Plastiform molding seems to take forever. No picture available at the moment, but think of the little cases that come with SD, CF, SxS or P2 cards. Then just enlarge to our SSD size.

Hey Mitch - it looks like your sunshade would work with the NebTek Power Cage. Can you confirm this? I am getting ready to order an FS-700 & an Odyssey 7Q and just need to workout what mounting option will work best for me.

Another question about the Odyssey 7Q. What is the typical run time powering the Odyssey 7Q with a single Sony NP-F970 L-Series battery. Assuming the unit will be recording using 4K2HD mode. I am not asking for a set-in-stone answer, just a ballpark.

I feel like the 4K modes (for obvious reasons) drains the battery faster. Can someone else confirm this? Seems like when I was using the 2K mode I was getting a good 2 1/2 to 3 hours hours out of a 770 (the medium sized). Now it seems like the batteries are going much faster, like 1 1/2 hours or so.

But this isn't scientific, just a casual observation. Tomorrow I have a shoot big shoot, so I can give a good gauge then. When using 2K RAW, I shot a job with a bunch of kids, 10 hours of actual set time and I went through 2 3/4 770 batteries over the day which was pretty good. I don't think I'm going to be able to do that tomorrow.

I would love to hear how you make out tomorrow. I am trying to plan/budget for everything I need to purchase and I could not fing any battery run-time information anywhere. I do realize that resolution & codec choice are going to play a factor. I would just like to have a good idea.

Hey Mitch,

Is Onion Skinning still in the works for th 7Q? I do green screen on occasion and it sounds like such a great feature to be able to line up the camera and actors to match the green screen plate. Also, how would it work? Would you just have an image on a usb stick or something?

Thanks

You are correct. The Nebtek Power Cage and the Ocean Video Enduro Plate both mount to the back of the Odyssey, leaving the side mounting holes free. Our sunshade mounts to the side holes so they do not interfere. But if you use the Nebtek side handles I'm not sure how they would nteract (don't have them handy right now). It's possible you might need to use a different tie-down bolt on the handle or the hood so that they don't get in the way of one another. Nothing insurmountable, just a trip to the hardware store.
