Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Vaporware it is

Vaporware it is

The way things are going, I would not plan on anything until it is released. I have money set aside for a 7Q but I'm not buying one until I see the vaporware turn into reality.

Vaporware it is. Probably nothing will happen until NAB.

I don't have anything solid that can be shared. Things are moving forward but not yet at a stage that can be made public. We had a meeting yesterday where it was agreed that we need to publish a new firmware forecast, but we have to evaluate a few things before we can do that.

I'll get y'all something as soon as I can.
Please no forecasts any more ... do it like Apple , bring it or dont! I dont get the advantage of a forecast. U can only fail by default, either u bring it on the specific date ... no customer will applause because u said so, and if u dont ... better run =)

A new, realistic update schedule would help to understand, how far away we are from SONY FS700 4K-recording. I guess, that is still step two after compressed recording in general. (And also in question: full availability of the device in the E.U. region). We have two different kinds of delays. Receiving the firmware without O7Q is no fun. And having the O7Q without 4K recording option for my FS700 does not fulfill my use case, too.

I would add another safety period to CD's estimate, of course.

I really appreciate, that Mitch keeps us informed.
Rollout of new products and services might always cause some delays and revisions, early adopters should not be surprised. But any delay should be caused by development hurdles and not lengthened to match marketing/NAB 2014 dates. CD should put all their forces to the core features now, to get the Babe rolling.

everyone keeps assuming Sony will play ball with CD and allow them to license sony 4K. That has never been substantiated.
edit: I'm referring to recording Sony 4k RAW on the O7Q. The capability to record some compressed format variant from 4k RAW is established and AFAIK coming in a firmware update in the near future.

I am writing about recording 4K with compressed codec, of course. Not 4K RAW recording. I would be more than happy with an easy to go-workflow, using popular codecs like ProRes or AVID DNxHD.

Should I cancel my order, now? Is this statement of Sony (2K RAW and 4K Video interoperating with Odyssee7Q) unsubstantial?

I guess the codec compliance has to be approved by Apple and/or AVID, not SONY.

That's a sad PR. You would think Sony would just unleash the technology to CD. Or even less, give it 10 bit internal recordeing to better accompany the S-log. Now even their small chip consumer 4k camcorder does 10-bit 4k internal. I can't help to think I'll even feel more like a chump once NAB rolls around and Sony reveals some camera with better specs for cheaper than the fs700. I would tell anyone, wait to purchase the fs700 until other manufactures announce all their cameras. Looks like in 6 months you'll be able to get better for less, though I doubt it will be from Sony. Thanks

That's nothing new and if you wait for another cheaper & better you will wait until you retire.
I am shooting since Sept 2012 with the FS700 and it payed itself in half a year. I am eagerly waiting
for my battery plate because I want to shoot 2K RAW next week. It will pay for itself quite soon too.

I agree. I bought my fs700 for one project I knew would pay for the cost after that 1 job. I see your point, I'm not complaing about the camera, I'm complaining about the manufacturer. Let's face it, we're going on 2 years now and still the only 4k solution is Sonys. Really Sony? That's what you had in mind when you were pushing the 4k feature on us? I don't even need 4k right now. The RAW on my BM is enough for my needs for now. It's just Sonys marking that pissed me off. It's amazing they still make the fs100, in all the fs700's glory, in reality it's nothing more than a souped up fs100 (which is a great camera for the price). The fs700? I'm not so sure.

FYI, I got an in stock notice from B&H for the 7Q. A few hours later and the website is still listing it as in stock. Does this mean b&h have fullfilled all their pre orders?

That's quite a statement from someone with no factual knowledge to back it up. We're still more than two full months away from NAB. If we would not get a firmware release in that time I would be very, very unhappy. So would everyone else at Convergent Design. There is a team working nonstop of this, and we've hired more programmers and engineers specifically to speed up our pace.

$k compresed recording is on the way. So are a host of other features, not all of them exclusive to the FS700. The Odyssey7Q does many, many things outside of capturing the RAW data signals from the FS700.

Last Fall I initiated a pet project as an accessory to the Odyssey7Q. It is mainly a mechanical design challenge and used different staff than the programmers working away on the firmware, so it could happen concurrently. Today I saw the prototype up and running and it's beyond cool. The prototype sees so close that I hope we can start shipping within a month. I'll debut it at events next week in NYC and Toronto. B&H Photo/Video on Wednesday afternoon, SIM Digital's Open House event on Thursday afternoon and an Odyssey event at Vistek on Friday afternoon.

We are constantly woring to move forward. And yes, we will have some cool new stuff at NAB too! Nothing to replace Odyssey, which will be the monitor/recorder to beat for quite a while. We'll have some interesting companion products that I believe will be of great interest to many of the people on this forum and others. Stay tuned.

It is possible. We have delivered significant quantities to many dealers. How many units were already spoken for is something they would know but we would not.

We're working hard to catch up, but the new orders keep coming in.

Thanks for the updates Mitch! Looking forward to the even more cats you have to let out of your bag.

Lo and behold, my dealer Videoguys in Melbourne shipped mine today! Its Australia day long weekend so I hope to be unboxing by Tuesday or Wednesday. Have a short script with vfx and green screen ready to go. I'll be testing the 7q as soon as we cast. Can't wait :)

I'm pretty sure a lot of people would be unhappy.

Mitch ... I hope their will be a firmware !-BEFORE-! NAB 2014! You are telling stories about your team working all the time, promising nice features and announcing updates every week. This thread ist alive since Oct. 2013. What happened during this time?

We have no recorders in Europe. The five most popular dealers in Germany have less than 10 pre-orders until today. That's not so much. I only know one customer who owns a 7Q but he's not able to activate FS700-option on CD homepage. He has a nice monitor but he can't record with FS700 :-/

We have no compressed codecs to work with. We like to earn money with our work. We need an economic workflow and we want to shoot 120fps longer than a few seconds. That's all for the beginning. Is that to much? Do we require that 7Q is cooking espresso?
Some guys here are right. The market is so dynamic that you won't sell 7Qs, because new cameras will capture 4K on cards inside. Perhaps earlier than you deliver 7Qs and updates.
Sorry Mitch for these notes ... but it's time to behave instead of telling what we (may be) could exept. Spend us a realistic timeline and please ... BE HONEST !!!

First off - here's an interesting tweet from CD about ProRes HQ: https://twitter.com/ConvergentD/status/426524240867639296 - Looks like they're currently thinking 3 weeks from now.

I'm split here. I understand everyone's frustrations, but at the same time, I understand the daunting task CD has ahead of them. Coding is such an incredibly tough process (there are reasons I went into video and not software engineering, haha) and things always go awry when in development of new tech. Do I think CD could have foreseen certain delays? No. Do I think they were being dishonest when they released their previous roadmaps? Not at all. Am I disappointed that things have been delayed? Well, yes, of course.

I'm one of the lucky ones that has their 7Q, but I do not currently have the setup to handle a RAW workflow (yet) nor a desire to deal with archiving RAW footage. But, at the same time, my battery plate hasn't arrived yet, either - so my 7Q is currently more crippled with the fact it's hard to get power to than any recording options, haha.

I used the monitor for a couple shoots so far (when I could get power to it from an outlet), and I loved it. What an amazing piece of tech to have all those monitoring functions on a shoot. I set false color to read at skin tone and was able to expose my shots more easily than ever before. And knowing that compressed recording and 4K are soon to be added, I'm still as excited as I was the day I got the thing. Seriously... am I not the only one who is still so impressed by the potential of this device that the delays are less annoying knowing what we'll be getting? I feel that CD has shown they can make a solid, great-feeling device - and with their Gemini background, I have faith the recording needs will be met as soon as they can get it done.

Keep up the good work Mitch, Dan, & Co.!

We got our 7Q last week and ordered the SSD's recently. Talked to Amber at CD who patiently walked me through the FS700 upgrade on their website, no problem getting that done whatsoever. Looking forward to figuring out the RAW workflow while waiting for the other recording possibilities.

three weeks from that tweet means Feb.15th and yep, i believe CD mentioned that date before.

sounds no delay to me at all.
