Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

We absolutely will have anamorphic desqueeze in several ratios. Bu it is unclear if that will make it in before NAB 2014. I should know more in the next week or so.

Mitch, I look forward learning if the de-squeeze will make it into the next firmware update in coming weeks, month or so.

Just for clarification, will the O7 have live view de-squeeze options for monitoring only? I recall you mentioning a few months ago that the O7Q may be required to de-squeeze live view, together with future recording options, whereas the O7 would like not do both live view de-squeeze and record.

Clarification is appreciated. Thank you, Mitch.

I'll check with the engineers, but honestly I don't think we'll ever change the recording aspect ratio. We would most likely leave the file as the file, and instead only alter the monitoring aspect. If it was a RAW file being changed into a compressed video file, I think we'd likely leave it in the same aspect and desqueeze in the monitoring only. The file could later be desqueezed in post, just as is done in pretty much every system of which I know. So that would be MONITORING desqueeze in both the 7 & the 7Q.

Mitch, I agree that any recording mode should not be de-squeezed, as per the live view monitoring. When I asked a few months ago if a de-squeeze live view would be available on the O7, I interpreted our communication to mean that perhaps the O7 may not even be capable of de-squeeze, together with recording to the popular compressed codec, and further, that de-squeeze live view only may not be a feature of the O7, which as I had understood matters, perplexed me. If the O7 will offer de-squeeze, this is great news, and if also capable of recording source squeeze recording to the popular compressed codec, then that would be a most pleasing offering from CD.

I am hoping that the next firmware update will include the de-squeeze features and now renewing my interest in the O7Q with an Australian dealer who ordered O7Q units, accessories, etc. In the next week or two, I'll follow you up on that enquiry you have made regarding de-squeeze implementation with your engineers/software programmers . It is great to communicate directly with a company that manufactures products in this industry on this level. Thank you, Mitch.

Chris, which Aussie dealer are talking to? I'm keen to take a look at the 7Q but I'm not aware of any local dealers who have any in.

Hi Grug, I communicate with Dave at Lemac in Brisbane, however, Lemac head office is Melbourne, so you're probably in a good position there. I emailed Dave Saturday, after hours (great movie), and today being a holiday, I anticipate an update tomorrow as to whether pre-orders have been fulfilled or if any stock is available now or soon.

If you go back a few pages, Videoguys in Melbourne had at least one available O7Q that was not on pre-order, picked up by a member here. Hoping it is not just a one off situation. Hope you find one. I am keen on 2.35:1 implementation, O7Q or O7. Good luck. regards,

Hi Mitch:

I think some of the frustrations voiced here go back to the fictional firmware schedule posted for the Gemini, of which we now hear nothing. Will the long promised compressed codecs for CD's first "flagship" product ever appear, or is the Gemini done?

Thanks.

While we no longer manufacture new Gemini 444s, we do continue to support the product. DNxHD has been long-promised for the Gemini, and when we complete it for the Odyssey we will port that work over to the Gemini as well. We do not abandon our clients or products.

hmmm....kinda scary! There was long awaited final updates for the nanoflash, which never happened. The original FlashXDR was abandoned after a fairly high capital outlay to buy in. Now, I read about the Gemini 444, which wasn't cheap, being put on the back burner. I just hope the O7(Q) is the last product C-D develops, for a while, so we get all these promises fulfilled.

I hope this isn't a trend...

Woohoo, mine arrived today! What a beautiful piece of gear. Running off the Sony L battery plate and a Cinecoil 3G BNC to BNC cable. Mitch has been freaking me out for weeks with the "90 degree connectors are evil" thing, but touch wood this one's been fine so far. (I have another backup cable on order that has straight connectors just in case.) I'm liking the Cinecoil cable as it bunches up around the camera without any slack hanging around.

Couple of pics of my ultra run'n'gun setup for when shoulder rigs and steadicams get in the way.
Ghetto handle out to the left to balance out the Sony handgrip on the right. ($15 flash bracket with a threaded handle screwed into it. Surprisingly sturdy!)
Man those F970 battery's are big. Not annoyingly so, but I ordered a couple of F770's to reduce weight and gain back some tilt freedom.

Pulling focus on this monitor is sooooo nice. What an upgrade from my SmallHD Dp6! It's simply in another league. I don't quite understand how SmallHD charges the same amount as the 7Q for their DP7 and it doesn't even have recording features.

Also Kudos to the CD activation system. Had my basic key code and f700 raw key code within minutes of activating through the website. Painless and quick.
Un-Kudos to the Australian dollar at the moment. Activation worked out to be $905 for me. Ouch! Oh well! Too excited to care! Any other Aussies getting their 7Q's currently? I ordered in October.

Haha, yes. Resurrected and put in service again. I was surpised how sturdy and rigidly it tightens down.

I am located in Australia. My dealer has filled one pre-order (one company in 3 states, QLD, NSW, VIC, so the one in QLD is part of a shipment split between them, FIFO ordered basis, I guess), other back orders still waiting to be fulfilled, unfortunately AU dealer currently can not get supply of SSD drives for lovely monitor. If and when the word is out that 2.35:1 monitoring will make the next firmware release, I will immediately place an order. Otherwise, I have only a select few other monitor manufacturers to offer anamorphic de-squeeze, less features and some are much more expensive. Not having ordered an O7Q yet, I may have to order/buy something else by late February. My hopes are for CD to kick some goals in the coming weeks. Enjoy your O7Q.

Texas Media Systems will release its next allocation of 7Qs on Monday Feb 3.

Payments by Paypal are getting processed faster since we don't have to deal with approvals or address checks.

You can pre-order via the link below.

Its the 20" timmy. Seems to be the perfect length with the coiled type cable.

I also could not find the Convergent Design cable anywhere in Oz! I ordered my cinecoil and 2x SSD's from B&H.
Even B&H has a perpetual 7-14 day wait time on the cd cable.

I've been doing some 240fps tests today and the cable is working fine in this mode as well. Boy it eats data for breakfast though.
